Radio Talk Show Host Calls Nurses"Kevorkian Fan Club"!!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

i am burning mad!!i was listening to a local radio am talk show that broadcasts from milwaukee today.the host was discussing a local story about chronically ill children in the public school system and do not resusitate orders. he stated that teachers and/or nurses at the scene were wrong to obey the order.he said that nurses or medical people who obeyed such orders were uncaring and morally wrong-even in the clinical setting of hospital or nursing home. he went so far as to call me and several other nurses who called in part of the"kevorkian fan club"!!!. he said it scared and disturbed him greatly that we as caregivers would not go against such orders.the emt and several nurses tried to explain to him how devastating it is to a already frail body to do a full code.he also blamed parents of such children as just wanting to rid themselves of a burden.

i think he needs to hear from nurses all over the country and know he is dead wrong.the talk show host's name is kevin fisher,(who was sitting in for jay weber) the name of the program is news talk wisn-am.

the email address of the stations program director is [email protected]

please send your opinion as a nurse and caregiver.

He said this to get a rise out of folks, its the only way ignorant hosts on these talks shows can keep a job. They pick a topic, then drive a point so strong its bound to offend someone. I turn them off and play a cd.

THANKYOU SO SO MUCH for your great email to Mr. Botts. The problem here is that this guy is a legislative aide to a state Senator and very well respected here in the greater Milwaukee area. I have posted on his blog, which I have put a link to in my other posting. He is not your typical shock jock.

All the more shocking that he would take the position he has on this issue.

Any more outraged nurses? I wanted to bump this to the top.

This man is probably on the extreme fringe of the right to life movement. I say this as a prolife supporter, but unfortunately, there is a segment of this movement that lacks a depth of understanding, is extemely judgemental, and likes to resort to name calling and baiting to get attention.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Psych..

This is just horrible. Perhaps this Kevin Fisher guy should spend a few days with the nurses on the floor to see what we really do and also perhaps he will realize how stupid he is:angryfire

UPDATE here is the blog of this radio personality who said nurses and healthcare workers who honored a do not resuscitate order were members of the "Kavorkian Fan Club", Here is how he tries to excuse his behavior, but still unapologetic. He is NOT a shock jock ,he actually is a legislative aide for a Republican State Senator and he is on a weekly PBS show ,plus he fills in for certain talk show hosts on vacation on this particular radio station.

I just tried to read this post but it says the post is deleted....perhaps he got the messege:angryfire

Yes, it does look as if his post was deleted.I wonder if the email I sent to his boss the state Senator had anything to do with it. I told him and the radio station and his boss the state Senator I want him to go on air tommorow and give the nursing community in Milwaukee an apology, I wont hold my breath though.

In 1998 there were 47,120 active nurses in Wisconsin. Not good to alienate them, their voting family members, and their large fan club of adoring patients and family, who voted nurses the most respected profession, year after year.

I was thinking he should also spend some time caring for some of these DNR kids and talking to their families. It would also be educational for the shock jock if he were to witness a code and the aftermath of coding a child who in all likelihood will not "get well" after such heroic actions. Then do you think he will understand?........Nah, I didn't think so either.

Stupidity and ignorance have a plethora of outlets with the wide variety of media we have today. A child who has a DNR order has been through so much in his/her short life, as has the family. Imagine having a child w/ a DNR order or participating in the decision w/ the family in making a child DNR. This is something NO ONE takes lightly. For this loudmouth to spout off w/o experience or research into this matter is one more example of how irresponsible media have become. I hope he never has to walk an inch in one on these parents' shoes.

I consider myself pro-life in most respects. I am not pro futility or pro suffering, although I do believe sadly, that suffering is often part of life. The man is just a complete moron to make this kind of statement and should be held accountable for his opinions.
