Racial discrimination in Nursing....

Hi everyone..I just wish to know if there is some truth to this..well, some of my friends who are now in U.S.A. have talked to us here in the Philippines about some racial problems. When she arrived at Manhattan, she was given a lot of assignments in her area..which she did not mind at all at first. But, there came a time..that she wanted to question herself on why other american nurses are'nt as busy as her..or she has to forego lunch and dinner just to see to it that she has done her duty well...compared to others..who can really smile around and rub elbows with other nurses. She is one of the best nurses we have here..and she can speak the English language well.

She went to the point of really pouring out herself to a friend she had and was there really a great flood of tears.:scrying:

So..may I ask anyone? ..Who do you think really originated in this land of milk and honey? Aren't most of you now in the U.S. also were once from other nations too/? or maybe trace up your ancestors....I hope all nurses will protect nurses and love nurses..be they be black, white, red, yellow or brown. In this way, we stand up in our profession as One.

The only issue I have a problem with is people of certain ethnicities that speak "their" language in front of others... Please save that for breaktime, or outside of work. Or, if people make zero effort to learn English, which, last time I checked, all my ancestors had to sink or swim to learn to speak it. I just find it absolutely appalling that people that have lived in this country for years, have made no effort to speak the predominate language... I am NOT suggesting that people give up culture, traditions, or language... just make it a tad easier on the health care workers that didn't have the time to learn to speak 20 different languages, by learning English, even if it is broken...

My male filipino charge nurse even told me right to my face "I don't like white people."

I worked an extended travel assignment where the nursing staff were at least 50% filipina. While I hate racism...it often annoyed me that we would be in the breakroom for a quick lunch and they spoke Tagalog instead of English...I felt left out. I don't mind them speaking in their native language a bit at work...but there is an appropriate time and place...not to the exclusion of co-workers.

I agree some of the Filipino nurses can behave the worst when they get a group together controlling a unit. They speak their own language and exclude non Filipinos from all conversations. So...I agree with those who say racial discrimination occurs in other races than white.
They discriminate against their own kind too. I work with a Filipino American and he's always pissed off about them asking him whether he can speak Tagalog and if he's married to a Filipino woman. Yet, I know alot of Filipino women at my workplace that are married to whites, blacks, and so on (can you say Greencard?). My co-worker feels alienated by their STUPIDITY! Personally, I get a headache just hearing that chicken sounding language all day at the bedside, by the medicine cart, at the breakroom, in the hallways, and in the parking lot. Shut up already! This is a free country and not the late Ferdinand Marcos controlled Philippines. People can marry whoever they want! Ask them if they supported Marcos and you'll be surprised that 1/2 of these brainwashed fools supported his 20 years of dictatorship (my American Filipino co-worker did a survey on his theory).

MESSAGE TO ALL YOU Filipinos in nursing: Quit asking American Filipinos whether they can speak Tagalog or not. It doesn't make you better than them if they CAN'T SPEAK that damn FOREIGN Tagalog! And you're not supposed to be speaking that foreign tongue at work anyway. This is America, not Manila. Take a damn ESL class if you have a problem with American Filipinos not speaking that crappy language made up of Spanish, Chinese, Indian, and so on.

I also don't want hear you whining about new hires taking your precious overtimes from you! You just work for that hospital, you don't own it.

We also don't give a crap if you were edumacated back in the third world country. Again, it doesn't make you better than American educated nurses.

Half of them probably wouldn't even be in nursing if the Philippines had more job opportunities.

That person's an idiot. I bet that Filipino had an accent huh? No American Filipino (my friends at work) would say something like that face-to-face (even if that person was a racist).

I work with alot of ethnic nurses, but it's Filipinos I have the most problem with (not the American Filipinos).

Maybe it's time to take a break and utilize your employee assistance program should you have one. You need some counselling to deal with your anger and resentment.
