Question About License Renewal

Nurses General Nursing

So I have a fellow nurse who submitted renewal just prior to her license expiring but now the verification system is showing her license as lapsed. She was called off of work since it hasn't posted as being renewed.

Is this normally how the system works? Seems as though she has lost time on the job because of negligence on the part of the renewal system to process her renewal. Couldn't find anything about waiting periods or lapsed licenses due to waiting until the last minute. Anyone have any experience with something like this?

If she did not submit the renewal online prior to the deadline, then the Board can claim her renewal was not received on time or at all. But if she has proof of timely submission, then she has a case. The employer had no choice but to go with the status as reported by the state. It seems to me that my state had or has, a grace period. I know there is one for car registration. I certainly would not push it with my nursing license though. One time I drove to the state capital and visited the Board in person in order to make the deadline. That was in the days before online anything.

This is why you don't wait until the last minute.

Thanks for the reply guys I will try to post a follow up about what happens when it is resolved.

A coworker waited until the last minute to submit her license renewal, and she had to wait for the normal processing time until her license posted as active before she could work again. It's not the system's "negligence" at all; it's always the nurse's responsibility to submit renewal items with enough time for licensure to not lapse. As adult working professionals, we are expected to keep track of those things, as well as any certifications required for our jobs (BLS, ACLS, etc.).

As long as your friend submitted her materials before the deadline, she should be fine when the renewal is processed. Bet it won't happen again, though! :)
