  1. As a patient, does confidentiality factor in your provider choice?

Yes. I wouldn't let certain docs touch me because of this

This is important to me, but I'd go anyway

Sure! No problem; I'd go to this doc

Just wondering from a point on another thread:

As a patient, is Patient confidentiality a factor in your selection of a care provider?

I know that when I've heard a doc talk badly about a patient, or I've met some of the office staff, or when I hear about illness or conditions "coincidental" to treatment at work, I'm not real confident that my issues are really private.

I always wonder: Would I want my employer to know this about me? and I get a little paranoid about my privacy. It keeps me outta the office about 98% of the time.

How about you?

Sleepyeyes...IMHO...there SHOULD be such a thing as CONFIDENTIALITY...however...there certainly doesn't seem to be anymore. I've overheard conversations between docs and other health care professionals about patients that should in NO WAY have been privy information to be chatting about in a social realm. My philosophy is IF you don't want it told, don't tell it! :chuckle :kiss

You bet I avoid certain docs/hospitals like the plague. I'm sorry, but when I'm a patient, I just want to be jane doe, a normal, everyday PATIENT, not 'so-and-so who works on xx unit.'

I don't care what the hospital 'rules' are, people look up your labs, read your chart, all kinds of crap. Whenever I had a fellow nurse in labor on my unit that I worked with, unless I was exclusively caring for her, I didn't read her chart at all. Some of the other nurses weren't so respectful.

I've resisted seeking treatment SEVERAL times because I'm a nurse and knew my treatment wouldn't be confidential at the facility my doc wanted to send me to. It sounds silly to some, but my health is MY business and my doctor's, period, and I know the real deal about how 'respectful' (cough, gag) other nurses/docs can be when it comes down to that whole 'not reading the chart of a patient you're not directly caring for' deal. Puleeze.

When I go to the doctor or hospital, I don't want to know a SOUL there. Period.

Absolutely NO confidentiality here between or within a unit, if you are there everyone knows. And although not everyone will be reading the chart you may as well assume that anyone who wants to know will get any juicy details that might be in it.

Plus the infection control nurse recently stated at an inservice that if you are diagnosed through this hospital's lab with HIV/MRSA that it will be added to the employee record and you will be required to modify your practice according to their wishes/concerns.

hhhmmmmmm. Confidentiality should be there

I would never be a patient in a hospital that I worked at. Recently, it was discovered that PCTs and RNs were looking up coworkers info in the computer based charting.............................................not cool!
