Ladies and Gents,

My preceptor went away for a week. I had 2 other nurses who took over the task. One did precpepted me for one day and the other did 2 days with me. I must add they were days form HELL but I am still wondering if I should give them a THANK YOU card with a gift card in it for 20-25 dollars? Does this sound like a good idea or will it cause them to feel the opposite of what I am intending to accomplish which to say a sincere Thank You?

I've precepted several new staff nurses over the years and have never gotten anything beyond a verbal "thank you so much". And I don't expect anything either, although I would like for my manager to hear that I've done a good job...

I think a nice note would be sufficient. :) Save your $ and there won't be any chance of it looking like a bribe or attempt at becoming favored!

Everyone I know got their preceptor a small gift for their final clinical placement...I got mine a giftcard to a coffee shop...some friends got theirs chocolates, a small gift for all the nurses on the unit (like candy, doughnuts, etc)

Nurses like food! haha

If the hospital has an "attaboy" type of thing, turn one in on them. I've heard them called all kinds of things "5 star program", "above and beyond nomination", or just a note to the manager detailing what they did well and how you appreciate it. Often these kinds of things count positively towards their evaluations. Our unit even throws all the nominations into a drawing each month and the winner gets a gift card from the unit.

It's great that you want to recognize the special effort those preceptors made.
