Pimples, blackheads and acne

While cleaning a patient's face, blackheads were mistaken for ground in dirt. (The individual had had a seizure and had fallen pretty heavily onto his forehead, enough so he was bleeding from a cut on his forehead) The nurse was observed picking the blackheads.

The individual actually looked much better after she was done, and the patient appeared grateful for the cleaning but...

My question is shouldn't she have just left them alone? What about pimples? And cystic acne? And boils? Should we be draining boils and other skin infections after they have opened up? I have noticed that this older nurse does this and the areas appear to heal up remarkably quickly. What is best practice?

You all are ill.

I have to admit that I am bordering on being a compulsive "popper" with my other half. But I should also add that I have been a licensed cosmetologist since 1994. From what I have experienced in nursing school (I've only made it through second semester) is that there isn't much taught in identification of various skin conditions. Would I let a nurse take care of my blackheads or other pimples? Probably not. I would allow a barber, cosmetologist, or aesthetician to have at it. If I were given a doctor's order than yes I would set about to removing blackheads.

For those angry looking pustules on the face, I usually recommend the client wash with plain cold water. Though I haven't looked at or done any studies, I firmly believe that soap causes a rebound effect as far as facial oil production goes. Increased oil production = an increase in likelihood of blackheads.

On avatarfarm.com, there is an avi of a zit being popped. I have come about *this* close to using it but just can't bring myself to.

WOW, I went and looked at it and what a killer zit! This thread is great as I too am a compulsive 'popper.' Only on hubby though, as I'd never cross that line with a patient. :o

Me and DH own one similar that we picked up at bed bath and beyond...love it. I suffer from really bad back acne...and since we've been using this on my back to get the blackheads, the actual zits have decreased.

Yes, yes. I used to have a set of these. My former boyfriend had a HUGE blackhead in each ear. So big that his hearing was affected by them. He thought that he was just HOH, but when I brought out that thing and was done with him, he could hear a pin drop.

I must also confess to being a popper, but only at home. I have been tempted plenty at work, but have thus far restrained myself.
