Per Diem Orientation

For those of you who work Per Diem did you get a traditional hospital orientation (week long day shift type orientation) or did you orient briefly on a few shifts?

For those working Per Diem and FT, how did you balance a traditional week-long orientation and a FT job?

Just looking for some specific insight in addition to other threads I have read. Thanks to anyone who responds!

Orientation for per diems at my hospital is a few shifts in the unit, plus I suppose there is the general hospital orientation covering the usual policies and the computer training.

The per diem staff hired at my hospital tend to be very experienced and only need a few pointers on gaps in their knowledge.

I had the typical hospital orientation and then about 7 or 8 shifts with a preceptor to learn their policies and charting system. The computer system change midway and there was a lot of paper charting at the beginning, which I hated. They knew I had full time job and knew that was priority, so I worked around my full time schedule.

Thank you both for your responses.
