Overcomplication: The Bane of the Nursing Industry

for your consideration

we know that tens of thousands of patients die each year due to medical errors as per the "evidence based" research published by the i.o.h. and others. we also know that the primary reason for these errors is "complexity" in the health care system, again based upon the very same published "evidence based" research. none of this being my own personal opinion as it is all published and factual, correct?

so as an individual professional functioning within this "complex health care system", i should be doing my part in looking to reduce this complexity by simplifying and consolidating wherever and whenever the opportunity presents itself, correct?

what i have found by experience is that the primary system to "simplify" is the one between my ears, or my mental "mindset" as to how i approach my job. what this has done in my case (and in those that i mentor) is to position myself to have an acute sense of "situational awareness" to then be able to apply appropriate and timely interventions to the maximum limits of my clinical privileges.

because those clinical privileges are significantly limited in scope, my job is essentially one not unlike that of the oxpecker on the back of a rhinoceros; warning the beast of impending danger while simultaneously providing a health service.

now that, is what you can call an oversimplified illustration of a point.

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.
