Out of curiousity

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Not to start a big flame fest here....but I am just curious about why anyone would want to post on these boards if they are not a nurse or a nursing student. It would be like a nurse going and posting on a physician board...just because she knows some doctors and works in a hospital. I know many paramedics, but I would not think about going and joining a board for paramedics. I know that everyone has a right to post opinions, etc. anywhere they please, but for the life of me I can't figure out why someone would want to be here if they weren't a nurse or student nurse.

Coming out of the closet as.....

A Mario Groupie!!! :imbar

I stalk his post just to see the newest picture of him! :roll

Maybe we should change the name of this board to Mario's Place....he seems to be everywhere these days and certainly has a growing number of "fans". lol

Now I'm a little worried, Marianne. ...we who are nurses do a whole lot of 'venting' ;) on these boards and I hope the non-nurse viewers (and students) are not completely turned off to us!

This is a good reminder for me that others may misconstrue posts of anger and frustration, particularly if they don't work directly in healthcare and aren't aware of our numerous issues today. We certainly don't want to unnecessarily frighten potential students away by being negatively one- sided, but viewers please note : this may be our only 'safe place' to share our frustrations!

All should all be welcome and we should not discourage questions or comments either, IMHO. We might all just learn something. :) I have been advised on these boards to 'lighten up' a bit and I am taking it to heart. :)

Good thread, Marianne---we are indeed 'in public' here and should be aware!

I post and read here because I too find this a great resource! Oh...and I also confess to looking for Mario's posts...his pics are such a hoot!!!! It's a daily "Where's Waldo (Mario)?" You really crack me up Mario!

And please...keep the honesty coming people!!!! One of the reasons I come here is for an accurate portrayal of the nursing profession. It helps me to keep from having too many delusions of what I'm actually getting myself into! I do monitor how much of the negative I read though...I don't want to get too discouraged about my future career but reading some of your stories has definately enlightened me a great deal about what my expectations should be as a future nurse. I love this place!!!

I hope that all the non-nurses that post and read are learning how hard a job we have. If we only see one patient every 15 minutes and we have 6 patients, that means they only see us every 1 1/2 hours. The rest of the time they think we are sitting at the desk oogling doctors---NOT.

I confess! I am a Mario groupie too. Although I will not visit his web page. I'm a grandmother after all!

I recently found this site. Although I'm not a Nurse or a Nurse Student (YET) , I'm planning on going back to school in the Fall and hopefully get in the ASN by 2004, I find a lot of useful information on this site. I enjoy reading posts about experiences people have at school or job site.

I wish that I could count the number of times that I have advocated, in the form of "Posts" on this BB, that the website ought to be separated, to include separate posting areas for Nurses on one Page, and Guests posting questions, or opinions whatever they want to post, on a separate area. Then a Moderator or several Moderators could monitor this site, and respond accordingly. The guest page would allow for anyone outside the profession to see only a list of the topics being currently discussed, and relate to a particular subject if they so wish, by Posting in the Guest BB. My opinion is obviosly shared by a number of others here because because I've seen it expressed, in other's responses to this subject.:) This site has, I assume, a Webmaster. I would appreciate their input to this suggestion. However if this is not possible, maybe the Moderator of this Post will respond. I will attempt to open a Poll on this subject so that everyone who sees this post may also offer their opinions. I am not that computer literate, but I would volunteer to Monitor said Non-professional posting area, on my days "Off" or even daily when I've finished, or before I've started work that particular day. I believe that we all know that we could not offer Medical Advice, but we could help people understand some the problems associated with our profession, we could refer medical questions to other websites such as WebMD.com etc.,etc.

As far as details, pertaing this idea, I would be interested in hearing from all who choose to respond, either here, or through PM, or e-mail I am available on all three. To all that read this post, have a great day :) :)

I am not a nurse, but I am not turned off by the "venting" I have seen here. Venting (in ANY profession) is a NORMAL occurance. As someone who works for nurses, I'd like to understand some of the problems or issues that they face. I think it would only help me to have a better working relationship with them. Also, I'd much rather people vent in a forum like this than to take it out on others at work.

mattsmom81...........good points.........but everytime you post.....you always have well thought out independent points.......

micro is posting for her own groupies.........nursing groupies now that is funny......................

but you won't be able to be a micro groupie because micro is so so so so very very very small

Please don't make me blush - I change my avatar because it's easy to. And I really look similiar, but different, everyday! I checked out a digital camera from the campus library aphew weeks ago, and went "wild." I have an ancient scanner that came with picture software which enables me to shrink the .jpg's down. So I just made a folder called "avatars" and did them all at once (approx 100).

Mario confesses: personalities are like wealth, and you should not flaunt wealth. I'm in the books everyday. Nursing is not only getting along with other Nurses...it's about knowledge and applying physiology to help and assess the needs of people in need. There is so much to learn. But I don't have a hubby or wifey or anything like that. Someday....perseverance (and timing) is the key.

In my nursing school, apathy runs high, IMHO. At the class orientation, "How many of you have kids" was asked, and over 60% of the hands went up. If they asked, "How many here have put their nursing career at the top of their list" I may have been the only one with a raised hand, and embarrassed to admit it. So, I am realizing that my zeal is not always a cool thing. I love this board because I can express it. When I tried to get a conversation going at school about "heart sounds" most looked at me like I was nuts. To many, clutching a cell phone takes priority to discussing physiology. On this board, I presented the topic, someone (Matts Mom) mentioned "lung alveoli"....and Mario's brain clicked. Now I believe i know what that morning sound is. I can't thank you enough.

Im proud to be in Nursing, proud of myself, proud of YOU, and all we do. You can be assured that if you, or someone you love, was ever under my care, it would be my pleasure give THE BEST nursing care on planet Earth.

Oh No. What will the next wave of new nurses be like if they are apathetic already?

I have watched the new groups of unskilled workers as they flock to our units. The first two questions are usually, when's lunch and where is the phone so I can make a personal phone call. They don't last long. Is this what we have to look forward to in nursing?

Mario, keep the light shining!

apathy.......you are right elder nurse...........what you don't take a break other than lunch break and you what grab a sandwich and eat it at the desk inbetween patients, charting and lights.......

......glad there are students out there that are in it for more than the $, cause taco bell is hiring.........and know that there are a lot more.................

just like the news.........we tend to hear the negative side..........

micro is a student also...........learning new and relearning everyday.......review of ventilator setting, troublchecking alarms, low pressure alarms, anticipating the dr. orders., high pressure alarms............

micro is also a teacher, bcls instructor........loves to teach.............

but micro is a nurse and has also learned to chill and be real.........

i know what I know.........and don't need to prove it anyone.........

135ctv.................great mind thunkin' goin on....

Jay Levan.........your name sounds familiar.........and after rethunk maybe validity to your thunks about variety of thread availibility........everybody, medically oriented someway and how, and just us!!!!! not being a smart a... here, seriously.......sometimes you can just say a word and another nurse knows your thought.....no disrespect to nonnurses.......ours is not such a glamorous...........career........but you gotta love it or not;-/

maybe moderators will discuss possibilities.............do think allnurses.com is a great site.........
