Let me begin by saying I'm a giant hypochondriac, so I know it's likely I'm overreacting. I got some kind of stomach bug and have been vomiting, but only three times in the last two days. I haven't eaten anything more than water and broth, but the emesis has dark brown stuff in it. I'd ask someone at work tomorrow, but don't want to be fussed over, and I work with very fussy people. Is this something I should be concerned about, or is my paranoia creeping up again?

Dark brown coffee ground looking stuff????

Yeah, only, um, clumpy.

well - not a nurse yet - but that does not sound good to me! Sounds like a GI bleed. I would call your doctor immidatley in the morning (providing you are currently stable- not vomitting more)! heck you could call your doctors office right now- I'm sure they have someone on call - explain the situation and see what he/she has to say about the situation.

good luck-

hope you feel better -

I just want to wish you luck and I hope it is nothing serious.

Be careful with medical advice...since it is not allowed to be given. (I just don't want to see anyone in trouble)

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I'm hoping the mods don't prematurely close this thread since they are wary of any medical advice being given on these forums. But I am not going to give any advice.

When blood comes into prolonged contact with the stomach's hydrochloric acid, it becomes a dark brown color reminiscent of coffee grounds.

If a friend called you and asked you the same question...what would you do?

You'd probably say, "You need to go to the doctor."

And you'd be right.

Good luck!

Eh, I probably should. I was hoping someone would post and tell me it's all in my head.

If they did, would you listen? It seems like you do know that something isn't right, otherwise you wouldn't be asking about it. Go to your doc, and I hope it all works out well for you.

Go to the doc, but I should say I've vomited the clumpy brown c/o GI bleed. Have you been drinking coke or anything like that? My momma used to give me that for upset tummy, and that'll give you something that looks just like coffee ground emesis.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Please go to your doctor. I hope you get to feeling better soon, but as another poster stated, we can't provide medical advice. Take care.
