As a male, I'm going to look pretty silly in a short, white skirt, white stockings (though, I do have the thighs for them), Mary Janes, and one of those clip on hats.

Oh well. I guess that's the price one must pay to have a career worth coming to work for.

Uh, if you're 18 it's unlikely you've ever seen a real nurse dressed even approximately like that. In a certain genre of movies, maybe. Good luck.

He's making a joke about the stereotypes. "Nurse Media" is a form of stereotyping nurses. It would be odd for a dude to wear Mary Janes, skirt, and tights to work. A woman wearing those items may seem "traditional"; a bloke wearing them may seem "progressive". Not wholly objectionable though

Yup Inspired, there are stereotypes about nurses. Some are harmless and some may have professional consequences if you don't actively counter them.

I posted this clip from the British show "Big Train" on the nursing humor forum, but I'll share it here as well. It is one...colorful...way of countering the "gentle, handmaiden, subordinate" nurse stereotype. And it's funny :)

on another note....do you know a sterotype that I have been getting lately that is really ticking me off... that all nurses do is personal care and wipe bums!

I realize that yes it is part of the job description, but we do SO SO much more than that.

for example: at the dentist he was asking me about my job....when I talked about nursing...he asked me how I minded putting people on bedpans and that sort of thing......

the other day when getting help adjusting my resume....the "career services advisor" asked me to write down my skills from my last job, and he gave the example personal care, and then asked me if there were any technical skills in nursing....

I'm sorry but these sterotypes really bother me...how many other people out there do you suppose think that is all we do!
