Noc Nurse perspective...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Here is what I see, or at least how I feel about what goes on at the hospital where I serve:

Night shift:

gets left over scraps from dayshift celebration, vendor, recognition etc

gets left over items from Nurses week, if there are any left

gets treated as if they are just filler for the real heroes that work during the day

gets to clean up after dayshift gets done leaving unfinished business

Just to name a few. No I don't need a cookie to avoid a "chip on my shoulder,"...it speaks more to irresponsible management. It does NOTHING for moral. Do any other night shifters see this disparity which is disheartening when it happens consistently? And it DOES happen consistently where I serve.

I would trade in all the day shift parties, recognition, and gifts to be on night shift. The night shift nurses at my job are super cool, laid back and know the true definition of team work.

I also work in a hospital where shift diff for nights is huge and on a unit where the work load disparity between days and nights is massive. I try not to complain - but I do feel like the impact that working night shift has had on my sleeping patterns, general health, and personal relationships offsets the positives of working night shift.

And to top it off, our night shifters get paid a huge shift diff. So while I know that we often leave work for the night time ppl, walk a few day shifts in your unit and then see how ya feel :)

ps-not trying to sound hateful. Its just that I've been on both shifts and I know that there is a huge disparity in the work load of the two shifts.

I took a HUGE pay cut when I came to day shift. But I had to for my health.

This thread amuses me, because on my floor it's nightshift who always leaves things a disaster. Nurses station is tidy at shift change... come in the next morning and there's food everywhere, people's homework, etc. Breakroom tables are clean.. come in and there's open containers everywhere, crumbs, dried out/old food sitting around.

My hospital makes a point to always offer night shift all of the perks that happen during the day. When we have employee appreciation week, they always repeat everything for nocs... typically around midnight, so people actually have a chance to go.
