Nightmares!!!!

Nurses General Nursing

I have been a nurse now for nine months now and finally feel like I can "handle" my title. My main problem is having a hard time sleeping, and when I do sleep, i wake up every hour until it's time for work. I have also noticed that when I go back to sleep, I have had wicked dreams involving blood, knives, my own surgery on a broken, bloody leg and so much violence. Has anyone gone through this? And is there anything else besides Benadryl and Ambien for good sleep? Thanks in advance...Amartin1

The best smelling one I've found is called "Tranquil Sleep" from Bath and Body Works.

Sounds like stress to me. On the occassion that I have to go to work the day shift, I too find myself waking up every hour till it is time to go to work.

I have found that relaxation tapes work wonders. I had been prescribed Trazadone by my MD, took it to get over the initial sleep problems after our home burned in May of last year, but got myself off of them ASAP. My daughter is a music therapy major and she purchased 2 really good stress and deep breathing relaxation tapes for me. Helped tremendously. I think all nurses have "one of those nights" after a hellacious night, and have trouble sleeping. Goes along with the territory. Also, I can not watch CSI, or any of those other murder stories on TV. Would rather pick up a good Nicholas Sparks book and curl up in bed, or better yet, if you are lucky to have a wonderful husband as I do, cuddling also is helpful.

One day I was in charge on a telemetry unit and was working 3-11. I went home and went to bed and woke up at 4am and needed to go to the bathroom. I laid there for about 20 minutes watching the monitors in my bedroom and waited for someone to come by and watch them for me so I could go to the bathroom. Then I realized there were no monitors in my bedroom and that I was just dreaming! Talk about taking your job home with you!!:chuckle
