Night shift question!

I am not a nurse yet, but I just want to know what to expect for when I do graduate as far as scheduling goes. I have come to terms with the fact that I will have to work some nights (depending on what I do), but I just want to know if the night shifts all have the same hours no matter what. I hear so many people talking about 7p-7a, but for me, 11p-11am sounds SO much more appealing because those are the times that I wouldn't miss seeing my significant other as much. He would be asleep and at work during those times, so it wouldn't bother me to work night shifts.

Does it depend on the hospital or area that you work in? Or do you actually have a choice in the matter?

Generally speaking, most hospitals offer normal 8 hr shifts or some variation on the 7-7 mode. The hospital I work for has a few units that have the odd shift you referenced, 11-11.

I think it will depend on the unit you decide on, the only problem being that they would really need some sort of complement to follow you. Its worth checking into though, you never know unless you ask. good luck!

I think the department that offers the most variety in hours, including 11-11 would be the Emergency Department. It really all depends on the hospital.

our facility is all 12 hr shifts, but some are 6-6 and others 7-7. The exception is ER - they even have 4 hr shifts to cover peak times.

My hospital only has 12hr shifts 7 to 7.

I agree, it depends on the unit. In the hospital I work I know ER and OR have different hours than the normal 7-7, 12 hour shifts.

But the norm, around here anyway, is 7-7, for most units.

For me personally, you couldn't pay me enough to work day shift!

2300 - 0730 right here!

my hospital does mostly 7 to 7 and a few 3 to 3, but i think our er may have some off time shifts to cover the busy times.

Hello,

Does anyone know if there is exstra pay on top of OT if you work more than 3 12 hour shifts? Thanks.

Hello,

Does anyone know if there is exstra pay on top of OT if you work more than 3 12 hour shifts? Thanks.

It depends on the hospital. Where I work they pay us an extra 30% for an "extra shift bonus" if we work any extra days on top of our 3/week.

Thanks for the reply but, 30% of what? How do you handle more than 3 12's in a week?

30% of your hourly pay. And I don't handle more than 3 days a week lol ..... very rarely do I pick up an extra shift. But if there's something I want to save up for, then I'll pick up an extra shift here and there ..... but I need that motivation to work an extra day.
