hi I'm hoping somebody can answer my question. I'm currently working now in SNF as RN supervisor , for nearly 5yrs. i want to get hired in the hospital but i tried a lot of times but I'm not even had a chance for an interview. when i checked their requirements ,most of them aRE with at least 1 yr acute care experience. but how like me can get that experience if nobody is giving us a chance, so I'm planning to get certifications like acls, ekg,may be could help but still not ,so this time I'm planning to take med surge certification , but one of the eligibility requirements is the hrs in med surg. working in snf consider med surg hours? by the way I'm from california.thanks

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

I'm not sure. Your best bet is to look on the AMSN website and see what the requirements are. I know for CEN (certified emergency nurse) one year of emergency room experience is recommended but not a requirement.

SNF does not qualify as med/surg clincial hours.

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

You'll have to search around for positions that don't require acute care experience, or who will give you credit for that time. I have seen positions posted requiring a year of acute care experience or 2 years of non-acute care experience. Keep looking, and expand your radius if necessary.

Have a professional look at your resume, and I would focus on your years as a supervisor. Also highlight any of your clinical experience you may have.

I would look at some of the hospitals that have a rehab unit, sub acute if you have to. Once you are in the hospital system, you may be able to move to another position in time, and once they can see how you practice.

Sometimes, you could see if you could float per diem to Med/Surg.

It is a heck of a lot "easier" if you are already in the hospital system to which you would like to work the floor. At any point in time, once established, you could have conversation with the med surg nurse manager, and discuss your goals, and where you need to be to obtain a position with them.

Also know that most of the hospitals do require that one have a BSN. If that is not a degree you hold, I would do that, then think about what certifications you would need.

Best wishes.

Thank you guys for your advice , i will try to do that .and im holding a BSN degree that hopefully can help me...

It took me about five years to get into acute care. Work prn in a prison or jail to get more clinical experience. Also dress up your resume to highlight wounds I Vs dealing with insurance issues for patients and such
