LPN??? RN???

Nurses General Nursing

Hello everyone. I am 22yrs old and currently attending school at a community college for my RN Nursing degree. i just started my pre-reqs. I was wondering if i should just go for my LPN or stay in school for my RN degree. I am already accepted for an LPN program in August of 2010. I am just afraid if I stay in school for my RN, i might not get accepted into the RN program since its so much competition out there. if i don't get accepted, i don't know what i would do. that's why I want to have my LPN license. if that was to happen, I would have something to fall back on. And let me know honestly, If i would be wasting my time going for my LPN first? THANKS

Certification? What state do you work in? Never heard of that.

Here we have a limited list of what IV meds we can push ( we can do most of them like Labetalol, Dilaudid, etc.).

Most of the local hospitals will have a class on IVs (mostly insertion) and then you have to have a certain number of successful sticks to be "certified". Even the RNs have to go through the class. In my area IV insertion is not taught in school - we learn to hang meds and maintain an existing IV. The local hospitals that I had clinical in and that I work at now do not allow any IV push meds by LPNs. One clinical site did not allow IV push meds by students. I work in upstate NY. :)

This is a good site to see what each state allows with regards to LPNs and IVs.

Ooohhhh.... ok...

In my LVN program we learned dang near everything and then some. Our instructor really hammered on us to go for our RNs (plus she LOVED it when we outdid the BSN students in the clinical areas:yeah:). She taught us a lot of stuff that really only RNs should do, "just so we'd know how to do it...".

We even had an EMT come by and show us how to intubate (that was fun).

This is Texas though, we do our own thing hehe.

I was shocked when I was told in RN school that we would not be taught how to insert IVs. They just didn't have the time to teach each student.

Is it funny that each state is so different. :)
