LEAVE NURSES ALONE!!!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Our facility is scheduled for an unannounced inspection.

Sooo...

The non-MD, non-RN administrators put on the

white gloves and start hen-pecking at what Nurses aren't doing, critiquing in areas of clinical nursing practice whereby

they lack the appropriate credentials to do so....

Hate to inform some folks,

if you aren't an RN,

you LACK the credentials

to evaluate an RN,

in other words---

LEAVE NURSES ALONE!!!

Did I miss something? I didn't see anywhere in the posting that it was commented on about observing a nurse in the med room. I fully aggree that most floor staff do not know the regs and facilities need to do whatever they can to ensure they are met. If the staff are completing their jobs as required, then there shouldn't be an issue when followed.

Our staff have become used to being watched just for the sole purpose of being comfortable when a surveyor is doing the same thing.

That's completely unprofessional and inappropriate. As the patient advocate I would introduce them and ask them to leave for privacy as needed. I would also let them know that customer service applies to ALL dealing with patients. Introduce them a few times and they will get the hint.

I actually ask the patient first if it's OK for these people to come in and follow me (confidential issues). I've introduced them repeatedly. However, the "surveyors" are not getting it. It's COMMON COURTESY that they introduce themselves. They have mouths to speak with, right? Otherwise, they wouldn't be telling us anything. These are just BASIC, SIMPLE, polite manners--possibly no schooling needed. Just common sense. Maybe this is something I could teach them.

I felt that they wanted to have the "upper hand" with very minimal to no introduction to the patient but will carry a pen and clipboard behind the RN.

I agree. It is a common courtesy to introduce yourself to patients. Shame they don't get that. For all we hear these days about customer service introducing yourself is about as basic as it gets.
