I was talking so our "Clinical Nurse Leader" who mentioned a pizza party we were having. I asked why and she said "our customer service scores came back for May and they were awesome!".

"But our customer service scores for June were terrible, I don't know why".

Me: Isn't that when management decided to cut staff because they claimed they were in a state of financial hardship?

Her: Looking like a totally clueless person who has a light go off above their head. "You know you might be right".

I wanted to say "DUH!". But my response was "They can't have it all, they cut staff, the patients get poor care and poor customer service, so I don't want to be lectured on how to give good customer service because our pizza party proves we can do it...........IF WE HAVE PROPER AND SAFE STAFF!".

Rant over. I'm off to write my senator now........again.

Dumb and Dumber Rides Again.....Clueless in Florida.....

Hey Tweety, you might be better off to write a screenplay and sell it to Hollywood.....make a gazillion bucks...and then run for Gov of FL??? Become the Tweetynator?? I'd even move to Florida to vote for you.

Good luck.....hope your letter reaches the right ears and they have to guts to do something about it.

Cause and effect - pretty mysterious I guess to some.

Tweety - the report on med errors today in the paper was great, but the only thing they didn't mention as a reason was inadequate staffing. Can you believe that. It so pissed me off. I ranted to my spouse on and on about how if nurses had time to care for the patients they would be able to catch most errors - theirs and others!

Agreed, Tweety for President!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't read it yet, it's on the front page here in St. Pete as well. To me there is a direct connection been safe ratios and so many variables: med errors, customer service and least of staff retention and job satisfaction.

Maybe I will run for President. Things would definately be different in heatlh care. :lol2:

You have my vote. There are a few non-nursing issues I would like you to address also!

Whats even sadder is that in Florida the pt census has usually dropped significantly from April to May to June even. So with fewer pts less staff to a certain extent shouldnt hurt, the key being certain extent. I for one would like to know what hospital is cutting staff so I can tell my friends and family to avoid said hospital. Shoot my hospital is still using and looking for additional travelers. If we could just get the hospitals in Fl to raise nurse wages 25% across the board, poof no nurse shortage.

Right, since those travelers make about 25% more than us, it wouldn't really cost them much would it?

Actually, let me clarify by "cutting staff", I don't mean layoffs. We have made some gains over this last year in ratios. It dropped from 7:1 to 5:1 where I work. Recently an edict that we be 110% productive means the ratios went up. Sometimes it's still 5:1 for the nurses but the techs go 20:1 or we do without a secretary. Other times the nurses are 8:1 and the techs might have a lower ratio. We're having to do more with less and then we have to listen to them gripe about our drop in customer service ratios. I almost want to laugh.

Previously they were satisfied with 95% productive. It's all a numbers game that's quite irritating.

We did have a summer census drop which propably started it.
