ICD-10 ?

I saw a large poster at a local hospital that showed a time-line for changes that will occur as all systems will switch from ICD-9's to ICD-10. It looked very intense and not just a little scary. Does anyone have a clue how this will affect nursing? I think 2015 is when everything will be in place.

ICD-9's are coding for payments from Medicare. They are a little scarey at first but you will soon get used to them.

Doctors are supposed to provide the number which corresponds with the illness, disease or surgical procedure.

These codes are already in use in the Renal community, if you dont get the right code you dont get paid.

It's actually 1-1-2013 when it kicks in. It's gonna be tough, everyone who touches a chart in our hospital will be taught how to chart for ICD 10. If the charting isn't there to back up coding doctors don't get pd or hospitals. Drs will be getting ranked/ paid based off the acuities of illnesses. It's somehow based clinically. Hospitals are preparing because the vultures will be at the back door wanting to audit the charts when we go live. They know there is going to be a learning curve.

I understand what must be done but I find it disturbing that now we need to chart for reimbursement and not the patient issue themselves......Wow

We've been doing this for years. When I was a case manager (2004-2006) in the ER, I reviewed all the charts to see if the charting matched the coding.

As Madwife2002 stated, the renal world has been using these for years.

When I order labs, tests, etc., I have to include the correct ICD-9 code in order to get reimbursement.

Yeah, I know about the ICD-9's from having to redo specs on which I forgot to put the code on or entered the wrong code. Nothing like a few mistakes for teaching you the right way, heh?! Mostly I was wondering about how it would affect nursing because it looked like it was going to be a labyrinthine process, all the changes in programming/computer stuff, etc. The poster made it look like EVERYTHING was going to be canned/wiped clean, and a whole new way was going to be dropped into place. EEEEK!
