I think I need a change....

Hi all,

I've posted this before but not have to seriously consider a change. I believe it's affecting my health and well being to stay working at the hospital I'm at. I'm working on an Oncology/Med Surg floor where or pt ratio is usually 8-9pts. It's overwhelming each and every time I go to work. Yest. I had a mentally challenged pt, I had to give two people blood plus platelets, I had discharge, a transfer, and an admission. I just feel like so that I don't get any more burnt out on nursing, I need a change. Right now I'm working at two hospitals as a PRN nurse but probably average 8 days a month. Any ideas on other areas that may be less stressful and if so, how can I get into them.

I would like to try outpatient, or home health but it seems once they see Oncology/Med Surg on my resume that's where they want to stick me. How do I branch out into something totally different. Also, I'm making pretty good money so I don't want to take a drastic pay cut....like working on a doc's office but there's got to be something else out there. Otherwise, I'll be ready to just get out of this field completely.

You might try Home Health I understand it's quite different. I'm thinking in that direction myself. You pretty much work for yourself, set your own schedule. Your outside a lot driving home to home. No body looking over your shoulder - good pay...looks good on paper anyway. I'm thinking seasonal pool too. I can deal with anything for $35.00 plus an hour.

Sounds good to me too. I've heard some negative things tho too, mostly paperwork and then not having anyone to turn to if you are in a crisis. I wonder if I have the confidence to totally be on my own because I still ask a lot of questions on the floor. Also the cockroach scene, I don't know if I can deal with...LOL

What's a seasonal nurse? Never heard that term...is that like PRN?

I only make $26.00 an hour as an RN working agency. I guess I must be in the wrong state.
