I know that Nursing is not all about the money factor, but lets get real, we need to eat and we all like nice things/toys.
With that said, what is the best paying RN specialty field to get into? I am still in my pre-req stages at school, so I want to make sure I pick something that is not only fun, and challenging, but something that nets me the best bang for my financial aid buck! If I am going to go into debit, I want to get the best return from it;)

Just got my final pay stub for the yr--as a new nurse in my 1st year (and I started at the end of January) I made 46,000 and brought home 36,000 after taxes and parking, etc. An additional 3 wks would have brought me to approx. 48,000.
This has been an interesting read--thanks!

I've been an LPN for 5 years, most fields...currently in Alaska, I make 28 an hour case managing home health, 25 teaching PCA/CNA's, 24 Detox nursing and upwards of 35 per hour for travel contracts in California and a per diem rate of $25 in california...I'm looking at the rates for new grad RN's and am wondering if finishing up my RN will be as worthwhile as I thought...

In response to your question, in Indiana, an LPN has limited areas that he/she can work, and limited duties within that area. Like cannot give IV meds push, or certain treatments. I think it is very worth going on for your RN. I have a friend who got her LPN, has 3 children (one who has a terminal illness) and is struggling to finish her RN, she is going about it through getting her surgical tech, then while working in surgery she plans on finishing her RN.
Hi, thanks for replying!...I'm working toward my ANP and ND, but I make a pretty good living right now as an LPN..lol, I will complete my RN, but sometimes I wonder, because even though it will increase my scope..I hate working as a cheap RN, lol..I will have to start over as "new grad" RN...I know it will be worthwhile though, thank you for your encouragement and I'm sending virtual hugs and encouragement to your friend!
I've been worried about the same thing. I definitely won't want to take a paycut when I get my RN. I know new RN grads start a couple dollars/hr less than I am at now. When it gets closer to graduation time, I'll talk to my employer about it. One thing I won't do, I plan to continue as an LPN until I've taken and passed my boards. GN's start at even less than a new RN. Plus, God forbid, I would fail my boards first time, then what?

new grad making $35 an hour base pay in SoCali, $41 on weekends. Hospitals around here are still hiring like crazy AND offering sign bonuses. $5,000 cash for a new grad, or $10,000 cash for an experienced nurse.
