Hi, I'm a senior in high school and after graduation I was planning on getting my BSN and becoming an RN. I want to work in the hospital. I was just wondering if you're allowed to wear your hair down or if you're allowed to wear bangs? I have lots of layers, side swept bangs and my haircut frames my face. When I put it up (leaving my bangs and framing pieces down) it doesn't touch my shoulders or collarbone (which I heard wasn't allowed). Are you allowed to wear bangs in school and in the hospital? I honestly hate pulling all of my hair back and Im pretty insecure about putting my bangs back. So are you allowed to wear bangs/framing pieces as long as they dont get in your eyes or something? Or do they make you pull all of your hair back?thank you!

As long as you look professional, I think most employers are pretty lenient. I know a couple of nurses who wear their hair down, but for the most part, everyone wears their hair up in some way (ponytails, buns, hair clips, etc.) if they have longer hair.

I have the same issue with my hair - the front pieces of my hair are not long enough to put into a ponytail. However, I absolutely hate having anything in my face when I'm working, so I have a ton of hair bands to pull these pieces of hair back, as well as hair clips to snap into any stray hairs. There is nothing worse than cleaning up diarrhea or doing a large dressing and having hair in your face. Or, being in an isolation room and having stray hair tickling your nose and having to resist sweeping it out of your face.

LOL.....

We're desensitized by society.

I have bangs (until I get the guts to get a facelift HAHAHA) and they are not an issue. Nursing school clinicals, they will tell you how they want you to wear your hair, and it is mostly not on your collar. When you begin working, you may find that even some hospitals have rules about hair, nails, uniforms, shoes....it is facility specific. Personally, you may find that your hair bugs you being in your face, and you do not want your hair to get into whatever it is you are doing. Experiment pinning your bangs back and putting your hair in a pony and see how you like it as far as it not getting in your way at school. Good luck in your senior year and in your future!! As a complete aside, see if you can get a little part time job at a local hospital or nursing home as an aide or a tech. The experience will help you in figuring out your clinical rotations. Again, best of luck!
