Hi Karen!!!! Talking about picking your battles, this is a MAJOR one.Although i am in homecare at this particular time, i feel the pain and understand what the nurses are saying. I agree this is a critical healthcare issue,relating directly to quality patient care. As a matter of fact, it is downright frightening. A nurse gives her/his all on the assigned shift and does not work under full power on overtime. I know this from experience as we all do. Do they just want a warm body?????? Patient's rights, patient's rights!!!! They certainly can drum this into our heads!!!! Well now, lets turn the tables, doesn't the patient have a right to a competent, alert caregiver?? They are allowing for all types of errors, possibly leading to all types of liabilities. Is there a mandatory law somewhere that states that a nurse must have proper food, rest and be as stress free as possible to work the MOT?? How about mandatory breaks, lunch etc, (LOL) that's a hot one!!!!! It just makes me so angry when nurses are used and abused as though we are not included in the human species, more often than not due to the d#@* BUDGET!!!!!

I am a Pa nurse. Thanks for the link Karen. At this point mandatory overtime is due to slow physicians and inappropriate use of the angio suite. It angers me though, that other nurses are subjected to overtime that they do not want. In any other profession, this would not be tolerated. but because we are the caring compaaionate paople we are, they get away with it.
