Tampa General Hospital wants nurses, offers doctors

Tampa General Hospital may think sex sells, but nurses say they aren't buying.

The hospital's new ad campaign insinuates nurses view their jobs as a way to meet doctors. But some nurses are shocked by the recruitment strategy, which comes as hospitals wrestle with a national nursing shortage.

Nurses are calling the ad demeaning and unprofessional, and say it promotes a stereotype they've fought against for years.

"It's insulting to both nurses and physicians," said Willa Fuller, director of member services and public relations for the Florida Nurses Association.

"RNs! Don't Miss This Opportunity to Meet 600 Doctors In Training!" announces the ad that appeared in the Dec. 6-12 edition of the Weekly Planet.

"This ad is actually very disappointing," said Dr. Pat Quigley, president of FNA. "We make every effort to promote professional practice environments. I would hope that Tampa General would target their recruitment efforts to known facts that attract nurses."

Quigley expects the ad, which also features a hunky doctor, will turn off potential job candidates.

"I think they'll be insulted and then laugh and joke at it," she said.

TGH spokesman John Dunn did not return a phone call seeking comment.

(You can give them a piece of your mind by emailing the hospital at this site:

Soooo..... if you go there and go to work and you don't get an eciting young intern.....that you have to help finish through school still even....can you sue the hospital for not following up on thier promise. Just what I need another God to take care of me.....NOT!!!! I thought the days of that is over but of course most of the nurses in ER are having relationships with doctors so that would be the reason that this is helping. I can't believe this....like all nurses would fall in loe with an older mature doctor.....what a bunch of b**l......

Year old or not, this hospital needs to make a public apology. I emailed them, and here is my version:

"Dear Sir/Madam

I am a practicing CRNA in Kansas, looking to relocate to the south. I have been planning to contact you for some time to inquire about positions. Recently, however, someone brought your recruitment ad from one year ago to my attention. Apparently, since I am a male, and happily married, I would feel out of place at your hospital. It seems you are running a dating service for single nurses to meet future physicians. ("RNs! Don't Miss This Opportunity to Meet 600 Doctors In Training!")

"Your ad is insulting and demeaning to all nurses. I would never consider working at a facility that apparently has such a low opinion of professional nurses. You owe a VERY public apology to all nurses, and should fire those involved in creating, implementing, and approving this insulting campaign."

Wonder if I'll hear anything back.

Kevin

Seeing as the ad was done a year ago, how do you know that they have not publicly apologized since running the ad? Just food for thought.

Leigh

Nurses receive apologies so seldom, I am CERTAIN it would be remembered...LOL!!
