Two days ago they were running news stories saying what a terrible flu outbreak some Texas schools were having. What they did not say was, 1. is it actual influenza outbreak or something else? 2. if it is influenze is it a type in this years vaccine? 3. if it is not influenze what is it and what are the symptoms? Anyone else know about this?

Whatever it is ,I got it. I'm from Texas

I was just getting ready to post the same link but you got there first P_RN. In addition to type A it looks like the old Hong Kong flu is rearing it head again.

Yes! it is the old Hong Kong strain...I had it when I was a kid and was down in the bed puking for a week, sick as a dog.

No wonder schools are closing down if it's that strain...I've never been so sick in my life.

I remember two bad outbreaks of Hong Kong strain. One in 68 and the other in 72. It made everyone deathly, deathly ill. Got it myself in 72. Was a young LPN then. No flu shots back then. Hospitals ERs were overflowing. We had rows of beds in the halls filled with patients. Only time in my life I saw that. My son was a year and 1/2 old when he got it. He was the only kid in neighborhood that did not end up with dehydration. I think it was because he had a nurse for a mom. It is hard to believe that the swine flu epidemic was even worse.

Yup...68 was the year I had it too as a child. My mom was a practical nurse and tried to help me but in retrospect I should have been hospitalized and given IV fluids...I remember being soooo thirsty and weak...and when she'd give me water it would come back up. Yucch.

The past 20 years we have had Pedialyte and stuff like that... not back in those days! I'm also glad the schools today have the common sense to shut their doors and reduce disease transmission.

Kids here are getting a nice, long Christmas vacation. :)
