Do you have your own malpractice insurance?

I just passed boards and I'll be starting my first RN job soon, and I was wondering -- do most nurses carry their own ? It was highly recommended to us in school. Do you carry a policy? How much does it cost? Where did you get it?

Please, please do a search on this forum for this info. There are too many threads on this topic to count.

Personally, I would not work unless I had my own. NSO is only about $89 per year in most states.

I was told by one of the risk management lawyers at one of the hospitals I worked for - DO NOT get it. If you have it they will go after you in a law suit cause you have it (the money).

The lawyer for the hospital is more worried about representing the hospital, they are his clients, not you. If you do not have it, and they go after you, then you lose everything that you have ever had. You do the math.

Even for the peace of mind knowing that you had an attorney available to represent you if it was required. Much cheaper paying $85-90 dollars for that.

I do not carry my own for the same reasons Pam doesn't. It is also backed up by my personal lawyer...
