Can anyone point me in the right direction for a source that discusses the causes of premature birth, including medical conditions as well as behaviorial causes as well? Thank you. I am going to post this in ob-gyn and NICU also.
Totally off topic, but just read and thought you all might enjoy this quote by a 19th century abolitionist:
"Power concedes nothing without a demand--it never did, and it never will. Find out just what people will submit to, and you've found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them. This will continue until they resist, either with words, blows or both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress."

Just happened to be reading this web page. A bit controversial but at least a start. Hope it helps.

Some of the more common causes of prematurity are infection, dehydration, incompetent cervix and drug use. These of course are just a few of the basics. There will always be those cases like in anything else that we can't explain. e-mail me for more detailed info.

The patients we see have PIH, incompetent cervix, preterm labor, multiples, and gestational diabletes most commonly.
Regarding preterm labor, there is a relationship with dehydration and infections such as UTIs and kidney problems. Of course, there is PTL with no cause. Also, I've been speaking with another woman about cytokines- she thinks they play a big role in PTL.
If you're working, go to L&D, look for a copy of Williams Obstetrics or some other medical text. Perhaps that would be helpful.
