Nurses week Cheap gifts from admin.
On Monday, we had makeovers and manicures. Some vendors came and you could get free Avon and other samples. Tuesday is vendor day for shopping. Wednesday is cultural diversity day, with employees making the presentations. Thursday is the ice cream party. Friday is 'Professional Day', with continuous 45 minute to one hour CEU presentations, free financial advisors, and Employee Assistance advisors to remind is about our 'back to school' program. Interspersed among these things are the usual give-aways such as mugs, pens, calculators, etc.

Nurses week Cheap gifts from admin.
My hospital has something planned for every business day of the week. I forgot what all they had planned, but one was a shopping day with vendors coming in, one was an ice cream party, and I think I remember seeing something about coupons for facials and manicures. They usually give us a meal coupon, too. Last year we had that stuff and they also gave us big coffee mugs and an insulated lunchpack. Once they had a photographer come for family portraits at a discount. I'll update after the week. I guess I should add that I love my job. They treat us very well and we have excellent pay and staffing. And, no, I won't say where, but it's a fair to big sized hospital in Houston.

Interested in the field of women's health, but not so interested in labor/OB
This is my area, also. I've enjoyed the regular clinic setting, a few years in a fertility clinic (we didn't follow the pregnant patient), and am now in antepartum. In antepartum, a baby is born occasionally, but I really don't care for L&D, either. Good luck!

Divorce And Affairs????
I think some women go to nursing school planning to get independent of a crummy spouse (my sister did this) , and I think others realize after graduation that they no longer need to keep a crappy spouse. I'm also sure many more go to school just to become nurses. Of course, it's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Houston nurses (relocation questions)?
The Texas Institute for Rehabilitation and Research- a very prestigeous brain and spinal cord specialty hospital. Very progressive. They don't like to be pronounced 'tear', and prefer "T.I.R.R."

Houston nurses (relocation questions)?
I don't think you'll have any problems finding employment in the Houston area. We have tons of hospitals all over the city and all the ancillary stuff that goes with that. Why not go to one of the local colleges and getting a list from the job placement center. Most area hospitals have a job posting phone recording you can listen to. St. Lukes, St Joseph, Texas Childrens, Ben Taub, Women's and TIRR all have excellent reputations. LBJ and Hermann are very busy and has poor pay and staffing but great learning potential. Methodist has a rep of not treating nurses well. I guess that takes care of the 'biggies'. There are LOTS more.

Forced to float?
I'm in the APU. I float to L&D (for APU patients. Some APU nurses take laboring patients, but I don't feel qualified and so am not required to do so), PPU and occasionally Med/Surg. I don't mind floating occasionally. It's nice for a change and I'm comfortable in those units. I would not like to float regularly as I like to have a 'home'. I don't go to the nursery at all. Don't like it and not qualified.

refusing mandatory O.T.
Whenever I see messages like this, I just wonder what the heck your union is doing for you. I had a long polite discussion with a union nurse on another board. It just amazes me that a union- which is supposed to help you- gets you into situations like this. I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I hope you get a much, much better job.

Funny things patients say !
I'll always remember a patient who came to the fertility clinic to have her 'fert-ability' checked. It just made so much sense!

holiday bonus anyone?
We got a $25.00 grocery coupon and a notice that next year we will recieve a dollar an hour extra for holiday pay... notice that our current time-and-a-half is now missing. My husband got $300.00. He works for a very small company (less than 25 employees) and has a high school diploma.
