A friend of mine works for an employment agency. She has no college degree, no college at all. She never even really finished highschool but did receive her GED. Now, it really gets me going knowing the type of work us nurses do, wiping butts, putting our own lives at risks w/ hiv pts, working long exhausting hours, for what? My holiday bonus this year was a meal ticket equaling $12 for the hospital cafeteria, and that was it. Compared to finding and placing people in jobs, a $3000 bonus. I guess priority is human resources not health. Did anyone get a bonus that is worth what we do? Or at least better than mine?

i was an lpn here in nj for 2 yrs and yes we did give shots. that is one basic nursing practice, what are you allowed to do? lpns here, for about a year or so, are now allowed to start ivs. on my floor- a telemetry unit- we use lpns for many duties, some basic ones that an lpn cannot due are admissions assessment, push iv meds, receive phone orders from docs and a few more. their limitations are getting less and less though the rn is ultimately responsible.

i started out as an lpn. took the course through a vocational school for 1 year w/ one month off in august. now i have my rn and am glad i do. though having your lpn is not a great advantage if you plan on persuing your rn. the time it took to finish my rn course was actually the same lenght w/ or w/out my lpn, even though i challenged out of the first year. the prereqs for the lpn do not always carry over for the rn course. as an lpn (here in nj) it was difficult to find a job in an area that i wanted- at a hospital- since the push for a "real nurse" (from the tv ads to "ask for an rn", of which i did find offensive and not saying lpn is not) was what most of the hospitals in my area were looking for. i worked in a nursing home and found my scope of practice to be limited. go for the rn, you might as well.
