What was this nurse thinking? Surely she must have known they would trace the missing drugs back to her. She can kiss her license goodbye, and she's probably gonna do time, too.

nurses stealing drugs...sooo disturbing! Im a nursing student and in class this week we discussed that topic. My nursing instructor said that she read in a study (she gave us the info but i cant remember) that there is atleast one nurse on every floor that is diverting meds...maybe not narcotics but meds alas....so sad...unbelievable too...

every nurse i've ever known personally who got caught diverting drugs got a promotion. no kidding! promoted to a position (staff education, nurse manager, case manager) where they wouldn't have to give narcotics. doesn't seem right, does it? i have seen two who didn't get promoted in our institution, but took jobs in management in a nursing home (and one applied for a job in a nuclear facility -- wonder if she got it!). i'm sure there are some nurses that do lose their licenses, but i've never seen it happen. as for doing time -- not likely!

The short answer is she wasn't thinking at all. She is an addict and was deluded into thinking she was going to get away with this. I've seen it up close. Amazing thing is it's sometimes the nurse you would never expect.

Oh, and no promotion for the nurse I knew. BON didn't care that she was married to an upstanding memmber of the community either. No time, but not a nurse anymore, either.

Wow, 44 counts and a $91,000 bond??? I wonder if that means she had possession of 44 pills at one time? I didn't realize the bond would be that high. The nurses I've known that have been caught diverting (or so I've been told) didn't get anything really "serious". As far as I know they were just terminated.

In Florida the law can be kept out of it and the nurse given a chance at rehab. But it is a felony here.

Tony, my spouse has a part time job as a counselor for the Intervention Project for Nurses, which reports to the State Board here in Florida, and as shocking as it is, the shocking thing is how common it really is.

Also, I can't help but wonder for everyone who is found out, how many are doing it and not getting caught.

Ruby, I asked my spouse about what you said and he said none of his participants (he currently has 12 memebers in his group) were given promotions. In fact most of them have lost their jobs and have had their licenses revoked and they are in the process of getting it back. The one's that have license are working with key restrictions or have earned back the restrictions by being in the program for several years. I agree it doesn't seem right to promote someone when they divert drugs, just to get them out of the way.

It happens more than most people know...

I work in both CT and NYS--> Unfortunately there have been a couple incidents of RN's who've thought that they could get by the system and steal narcs for their use or friends. Of the 3 RN's I was aquainted with all of them had their licenses suspended pending completion of an inpatient rehab treatment and outpatient counseling. 2 RN's did not complete the requirements and lost their position at the hospital as well as had their license revolked. I've never heard of anyone receiving a promotion for their participation in stealing narcotics, a felony?!#$%

ruby vee, i have seen two nurses get promoted in our facility not for diverting drugs, but for wrong doings in general. they told the powers that be that if they have to go before the bon and lose their license, they in turn will to go to the media and tell them exactly "how this place is runned." tptb backed down, moved them away from the bedside and put one in education where she gets every weekend and holiday off, and the other works in the office doing staffing, not really a supervisor, just in the office getting every weekend and holiday off. the nurse who is now in education comes around to the units training new nas. :uhoh3: it's unbelievable how she can show her face to fellow co workers and then comes with an attitude on top of it when in actuality everyone including herself knows she should be cleaning toilets for what she did. when we see her we could just :barf01:. :angryfire
