Appointed as a shift supervisor to represent ED in Education and Research

I have never heard of someone being assigned a position without having a discussion with their manager, so this is a little new to me. You should be given a guide or some type of description for this position. Is this part of the clinical ladder program? If so then there should have been some discussion about what areas you were interested in. I am just returning to the acute care environment, and when I left I was working on my Clin III, so I am starting again on the ladder. I think they are good if you truly have the time to devote to what the unit needs/wants and it does help you progress with your career. If you plan on staying at your current facility it will look better to any manager if you are participating in the clinical ladder program. It is also a good way to network within your facility. Research for ER would most likely be about turn-over, through-put to make the ER time more productive. Staff education could be anything that the staff has indicated they need help with or more practice, or a new procedure/product being suggested for use in the ER. It could be also something recommended by the ER MDs perhaps something they want the nurses to be more proficient with, or something they would like to present themselves. Good Luck!!!

That's what our director told me actually. And yes it's on the clinical ladder prog. Thanks so much for all of your info. I do not know if i have to accept this one because i will be moving to california next june

Congratulations - your first committee assignment. If your hospital has a well-developed shared governance structure you will probably attend some kind of orientation session that will explain the various committees and their responsibilities.
