Always on your Feet?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey,

I have always wondered how you nurses withstand being on your feet all the time. I fell down some stairs about 2 years ago, and my right ankle (now bad ankle) is always giving me problems in swelling and aching. I work at a mini storage, and I am always walking. Just wanted to know what yall do it to make it easier or more bearable.

Thanks.

Now I have a stupid bunion (which I have always had) but it is protesting the constant pressure of the shoes and developing a huge callous on top of it to add to the pressure and pain already there. Cute, huh? I wear the widest shoe available as it is. Next thing I'm going to have to cut a "window" in my shoe and let that baby stick out like a sore thumb ! :p

I have that same darn bunion. For relief I use this thing you put between your big toe and the next toe. What it does is help to straighten out the big toe and it relieves some of the pressure off the bunion. You can find it at CVS or Rite-Aid or one of those stores in the foot care section where they have the Dr Scholl's inserts, the corn pads etc. It really helps. It's getting so bad though that I'm beginning to think surgery, but I don't really have time to recoup for 8 weeks. Guess I'll have to live with it.

I'm on my feet from 3 o'clock in the morning when I get up and dressed until about 3 pm or later at work.. then on to buy groceries, home to do laundry, etc... I finally got OFF my feet when I go to bed around 8 pm. That's a long time, and I believe most of us are all in the same boat.

Do they hurt? Yes. Do they swell? Yes. What do I do about it?

Just deal with it. Go barefoot everychance I get while I'm not working.

I had the surgery on a very painful bunion several years ago, and I'm so glad I did. It was still tender for several months afterwards but the discomfort diminished noticeably as the days went by. My shoes fit now! I don't wake at night from the painful pressure of my foot on the bed! The only problem I had

(and a very silly one at that), was the sight of my un-bunioned foot after surgery was slightly disturbing. My brain kept saying

"Who in the hecks foot is that?????"

Specializes in ICU.

I have told my entire family that I don't care what they do to me after I die but please do not bury me the way they apparently do in China - stnding up! I have spent enough time on my feet this in THIS life I do not want to spend eternity that way!

Has anyone tried the old "feet up the wall" trick? Lie with your bottom agaist the wall and your feet up the wall.

My personal FAV? Looonnggg hot bath! A Book a bottle of bath salts for aching muscles a bottle of vaseline and AAAHHHHHH!

OH! The vaseline? You put that on the doorknob to stop the kids from coming in.
