U.S.A. Florida

Hello All Florida Nurses & Travelers

I want everyone to be Upfront & Honest With this One! Where is the Absolute WORST PLACE to work as an RN, Or as a Nurse in General In any part of Florida? I want to know of any places that I should avoid, such as Backbreaking work, Low Pay, Poor Staffing, anything considered Negative or Unsuitable. Also, High Liability too. I would much rather hear it straight from the horses mouth instead of finding out the hard way! All Honest Opinions & Personal Experiences will be Greatly Appreciated! If anyone wants to know about California, just ask. Please Respond. Thanks;)

I haven't worked there yet. That is from Fortune Magazine, Working Mother and AARP. I start on the 23rd. I will let you know.

Good luck on the new job, yes, please let us know how it is....

I've heard they're one of the best places to work, but I wonder what they base those statistics on...

I considered a staff relief position there in the ICU, but they were too demanding with the weekend and hurricaine requirements for my needs.

First place would be Northshore Medical in Miami. Next up the former Parkway. Northshore is a ghetto hospital, very poorly run. Particularly the Maternal/OB. Director is a tyrant, also ignorant of basic nursing concepts.

Avoid anything Tenet.

I agree to avoid anything Tenet but Parkway is no longer a Tenet hospital it is part of Jackson and is now called Jackson North...

I agree. Its really horrible at Northshore. They are definitely in the top 5 of the Worst of the Worst.

To the OP, all the time I tell people who say they are moving to Florida to stay away from the Tenet and HCA hospitals down here because they are not good places to work, for many different reasons. More and more these people prove that they are interested in one thing only, and that's to make a lot of money while delivering really poor patient care support. Some of it is so freakin dangerous that it should be illegal.

I would also recommend staying away from the Kindred hospitals because they are pretty bad as well. I have such a list, you guys....!

So where are nurses going to work? Because most hospitals in SFl are part of these places (Tenet and HCA)? I do agree that they are bad though but even the others are not that good either like Memorial.. I honestly believe it is the floor on which you work on. I had a horrible experience at Memorial, the higher ups and nurse mgers were bullys but my friend loves it, she]s on a different floor from where I was. So until you have an experience with a place I guess you really don't know how it will turn out.

i have been working agency at boca raton community hospital for the last year and cannot advise anyone strongly enough to avoid it. you will be floated to any and all units, including e.r. and will be canned immediately if you balk. the bad part is that it is not an isolated case. there is not really any hospital in broward or palm beach that has any interest in patient care or nurse welfare. avoid this area like the plague.

No situation is perfect. However, not all hospitals in Florida are like that. Baptist in Miami is considered one of the best places to work for in America.

And they post that poster all over the place! The Baptist system itself isn't bad - S. Miami Hospital is one of the good ones in the system. Main campus though - seen plenty of new nurses RUN from there, Magnet or not. Baptist system has bought up several of the area hospitals, Doctors Hospital being the most recent.

Have heard and seen lousy working conditions at North Shore ;(

JMH is county - you learn a lot but your experience is very much based on the department/unit you work in. There's the main campus (huge) and 2 satellite hospitals in that system (Jackson North and Jackson South).

If you want a good view, work at Mercy, right on bay. Small hospital, but the folks there seem pretty happy.

That's exactly the point. If you plan on moving to south Florida to work as a nurse, DON'T! Most of the hospitals down here are owned by the two gigantic evil corporations who couldn't care any less about nurses or patient safety and care. Every place has its pluses and minuses and you can sometimes find contract work that pays very well, but certain places here are definitely not where you want to be. It just so happens that the worst of them happen to be facilities owned by the evil twins.

Orlando Hospitals suck: Orlando Regional and Florida Hospital. Pay is low, even as a traveler and you feel like your license is on the line. I thought Tampa and St. Petersburg weren't too bad. I felt appreciated at All Children's in St. Pete and was treated well; where at Arnold Palmer (part of Orlando Reg., I was an overpaid baby-sitter who was bored for 12 hrs).

i absolutely agree with you dude. used to be that people came down to work during season as travelers, nowadays though they don't come back after one tour. so to msmorningglory and zubster or any others that fail to heed the cry come on down. you have been duly warned so don't whine when it turns out to be just as those of us here have reported it to be...
