Valencia College Spring 2015

U.S.A. Florida

I just found out that I have been accepted into Valencia's Spring 2015 Nursing program!!! I heard from someone that it is possible to start a semester or two before your scheduled start date.....is that true? Also, can someone please tell me how much the uniforms (shirts) and other expenses are prior to the start of the program? I know you have to wear khaki pants...what about the sneakers? Is it all white or can it have some color added to it? What is the usual schedule for Nursing 1 and 2? Thank for any response you can provide! I can't wait to start! :yes:

Was it required to turn in the background check before applying or after you are admitted?

Hey xoxJanexoxDoexox! Thanks again for all your input and advice regarding the program! I have another question and this time is about Pharmacology and Dimensional Analysis. Well, I can say that I am okay in Math, but I am far from being super good in it! What can you advice for me to read up on and study while waiting to start the program? How do professors grade the tests and how much percent should you get to pass? Did a lot of your classmates fail Nursing school because of math-related issues? I know it is still far off but I really want to be prepared before I start!

You sound just like me! I like to joke that dimensional analysis is the only type of math I CAN do (considering I dropped/failed intermediate algebra 3 times). For some reason I never really understood proportions until the nursing program. That's essentially what dimensional analysis is. The book list they give you for first semester will have a DA book on there. Our book was The Nurse, The Math, The Meds..this is a link to it on amazon (Amazon.com: The Nurse, The Math, The Meds: Drug Calculations Using Dimensional Analysis, 2e (9780323069045): Joyce L. Mulholland RNP: Books). I thought it was pretty helpful. The professors are great about answering your questions but it is mostly self taught. They dedicate 1 to 1 1/2 days to teaching you the fundamentals. After that there are a lot of practice questions and self study. Just like almost everything else in the program it's sink or swim. You have to take a DA exam at the end of nursing 1 and pass to move to nursing 2. At the beginning of nursing 2-5 you will take a DA quiz at orientation. When I graduated you were allowed 3 attempts to pass. If you failed the first time you had to remediate with a professor before taking it a second/third time. I failed the first time at the beginning of 3 semesters. Mostly for things like..putting the decimal in the wrong place..forgetting a zero or some other minor mistake. I always had a group of other students with me each time (its easy to get rusty between semesters). Did I mention you need a 92% to pass? Depending on the amount of questions you are usually allowed to get 2-4 wrong to still pass. I don't know anyone who failed because their dimensional analysis was weak. If you really want to get a head start I would suggest taking some practice questions to the math lab on campus. I've never used it but classmates said it was helpful. Even some of the "smartest" students ended up doing remediation once or twice so it's not something I would cry over if I didn't pass the first time. http://nursing.illinoisstate.edu/faculty-staff/ClinicalResources/DevelopmentDayDApresentation.pptx. This website has a list of conversions and abbreviations you can memorize now to get ahead of the game. It also has some examples for you to look at.

You are heaven-sent for answering these questions!!!! I am more at ease now and not so nervous about starting the program!

Do you still remember how your schedule was for each semester from nursing 1 to 5? Like EXACT days and times of lecture, lab and clinicals? Are there classes Mon-Fri every week? I know its still early, but I want to know how nursing school will change my daily family life and work schedule once I actually begin! Any response from previous or current Valencia students is greatly appreciated!

Oh boy..I started the program almost 3 years ago so I can't recall exact days or lecture times. We chose our clinical sites/days which was nice. I have no idea if they change up the days/times every semester or if it's exactly the same. Hopefully someone who is currently in the program can help you out :) I'm glad I was able to help! I remember how terrified I was on my first day. I had no idea what to expect. I didn't even know if I would make it through the first semester. Somehow you become one with the chaos and learn to cope ;)

I haven't been on here in a while, but if you're still curious about the scheduling I can try and dig up my old calendars. I'm currently in Nsg IV at Valencia, and taking a break from studying and decided to see what's going on in the forums.

I need help from former Valencia Nursing students! I just received an email from the school and I am being offered a spot to start Fall 2014!!! My problem is since I was not expecting to start so soon, I booked a vacation on Dec 13th which I cannot back out from. I checked the class dates for Fall 2014 and classes for Nursing I ends on Dec 14th. My question is, will finals fall on Dec 13 (Saturday) and Dec 14 (Sunday) or will classes and finals end on a weekday (Dec 11/12th)? I'm really in a dilemma and this is the reason why I cant make up my mind whether to start this Fall or next year. Thank for your replies!

@boragirl

I never heard of any nursing courses giving finals on a weekend. Your finals are usually given on days that you're attending school. You can also call or email them...I've emailed them several times about questions and they have answered me.

Congrats on getting a letter for fall 2014... I got one for summer 2014 and fall 2014... But unfortunately I haven't gotten all my ducks in a row so I will have to start on my original date in spring. Hope this helps. .but I would find out for sure...GL ;)

I know its still early but I have a question about the shoes we need to wear. I am aware that we need to wear all white sneakers. I recently saw all white walking sneakers at Nike on clearance but there is a LIGHT BLUE swoosh/check logo on the side of each shoe. Would that be ok? Any other info on the uniforms would be greatly appreciated!

@boragirl

I spoke with my friend that graduates today about sneakers and stethoscopes. we can get whatever stethoscope we want (brand/color) and sneakers she said that no one rarely had all white shoes. she said they were hard to find. i found some online at jc penny for 50 bucks that have a bit of gray in them and she said a lot of the students had sneakers like that. so i am guessing yours should be ok. I will be meeting up with her within the next few weeks to talk about everything in nursing. I will post anything that I think is important. Hope this helped =)

To help you out, our final is on the 8th, and our pinning is on the 11th, so I'm pretty sure you're good to go with your vacation.

Thanks tvleon13 for the helpful info! Please feel free to write any more updates from your friend on this post anytime! ;)
