Tips on getting a hospital job as a new

I have been desperately trying to get into fl hospital new grad program but it seems God has other plans for me. I am so discouraged at this point because it seems as if no hospital will hire a new grad but I can't get the experience cause I keep getting rejected from the new grad program. I am assuming it's my GPA since t dropped down to a 3.3 my last year of nursing school.I can sure use ANY tips on getting a hospital job. I am currently employed at a skilled nursing facility and I DO NOT see myself there much longer due to many reasons. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help out.

I think your best bet is to look outside of Florida. A friend of mine has been a nurse in Tampa for years and told me the market is saturated there. Truth be told, the market is saturated in many U.S. cities. But you may need to "bite the bullet" and apply for jobs in other states. Anything is possible and you can do it.

In my experience, GPAs have very little to do in getting a job, especially in nursing.

I agree with emoraver, your GPA has very little affect on whether or not you are hired. I sent out hundreds of resumes and after 5 months was hired as a new grad OR nurse in So. Florida. My GPA was 3.4. The hospital I currently work in requires a new grad to have a BSN. It is true the market is saturated with new grads in Florida but don't get discouraged. Keep sending out your resume. Eventually something will come your way. Good luck!

Where are you (in Orlando)? I am also a new grad and had an interview a few days ago at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. I have a second interview coming up this week. Maybe looking outside of Orlando would help. For me it will be about a 40 min drive, but well worth it, if they offer me a position.

I feel the same way im at a nursing home I mean it pays the bills but it isnt my dream im so unhappy there help us some get into the hospital!

GPA means nothing. My brothers GPA is like 2.1 and is one of the top nurses at his hospital.

Also, I'll never work a nursing home again. They are vile places that only care about profit rather than people.

At my hospital a lot of units post jobs AFTER the position was already filled just to make it official. If you know someone who already works in a hospital and can introduce you to a unit manager. They are not just looking for how much you know but also your personality, can you get algo with others etc. If you get such opportunity bring your resume. If they like you and no position available yet, it will go in a manager "go to" drawer. When they know of a position opening up, they call up those already in the drawer first. At least that's how I got hired.

They don't care about GPA. OP, do you have your BSN? I know people hate to hear this but fact is, Florida Hospital is desperately trying to gain magnet status. This requires them to have a certain percentage of BSN nurses to become certified. I have not applied to them yet but did get solicited from their recuiter to apply to the new grad prgram and one of my classmates just got a job there last week and she has not even taken the nclex yet. They are big on getting BSN's at this time. Also many magnet hospitals required ADN's to sign a contact stating they will get their BSN in 2-3 years or be laid off. Its not about who is better than who, its the simple fact of where the industry is heading.

IF you already have BSN, good keep applying, if not enroll in a RN-BSN program to become competitive.

@Risky it is the saddest thing I cannot wait to get out ofthe home I am at. I refuse to be apart of the non sense. I am saddened by the homes here in Orlando.

I don't know what the hiring needs of the hospital are, but it certainly doesn't hurt to apply. I am new to the area and make a point of taking alternate routes to get where I'm going. So, I drove through Lakeland one day on my way home from Orlando. I literally drove right past the hospital. Came home googled them, and submitted my application online. I was surprised to hear from them, but happy to have the opportunity. I have since been to several interviews (floor manager, HR, employee health). I was offered a FT PM position and begin orientation next Monday. In the mean time, I'm reviewing EKG strips and trying to brush up a bit on my knowledge base
