Tampa General or Bayfront?

U.S.A. Florida

Hello! So I have a dilemma (albeit a good one). I am a new grad with 2 job offers. My first offer came from Tampa General in their Acute care rotation program. Pros: although I won't be working there right away, they do have Peds which I eventually want to work in, Magnet status, nice hospital in nice area, people I met seemed nice, generally felt good about it, good reputation. Cons: long commute over the bay, no one I know works there, less pay

My other offer came from Bayfront in the acute care track nurse residency. Pros: friend has job there, shorter commute, pays more. Cons: no pediatrics, not magnet status, I haven't seen much of the hospital it it didn't seem quite as nice as TGH, not sure about reputation as I've heard mixed reviews.

Help please!! :/

Forgot my other pro for TGH--job starts 2 weeks later than bayfront and I'd really love to have the extra time to relax now that I've finally passed my nclex

CHS hospital are the worse for profit hospitals in existence as far as I'm concerned. Having work in a CHS hospital for 14 years many years back the only thing, I repeat the only thing corporate is concerned about is profit. You mean nothing, you will have no voice, you will have nothing but the feeling of disparity and anger towards upper management and the company. I worked in the ICU Dept. with 78 other full time nurses, good nurses, no great nurses. In the course of 23 months this CHS hospital (not in Florida) went through 125 nurses in just this one ICU Dept with 28 beds. The CNO once told us nurses in a meeting; 'Nurses of nothing more then part of the room charge'. If that is the view point of upper management they can keep it. I maxed out my vacation time having 250 hours banked and unable to collect more time or money. I gave a 5 month advance notice for a 2 week vacation and was denied. I can go on and on but here a news article about the worse hospital with the highest bill rate look at the chart and see CHS wins hands down charging 10 times the Medicare rates.

i'm in the ACRP at TGH now and I love it. Med-surg isn't what I want to do either (I actually hate it) but it's a great stepping stone. It's also a really great way to learn a variety of skills that new grads need to develop. Even tho med-surg isn't my thing, it's a great starting point. Also, while you're working, if a peds job becomes available, you can always apply. TGH is the only hospital that offers a pension from what I know. IDK if you plan to be there forever, but the benefits are very good. Yes, the pay sucks, but experience at a level one trauma center and magnet hospital is awesome. I feel like every time I rotate to a new floor, each preceptor is going to teach me something different, which in turn, will make me a more well-rounded nurse. It's an awesome experience and I would choose the same path if given the choice again. Everyone knows we're rotators and are fairly new nurses, so they understand that we're still learning. We aren't being thrown to the wolves and we really are taught so much. It's an awesome program. I see nurses who only know their floor, and how that floor does things. Being able to go to many different floors allows you to experience and gain different perspectives from each place you go. Side note, the nurse residency program is only one of 3 in the state. It's mandatory at TGH for all new nurses. While it won't make or break your job growth in the future, it's a good asset for your resume.

I don't know anything about Bayfront. I can tell you that I am proud to work at TGH. It has a great reputation and nurses are pretty well respected in the public IMO. Sometimes when I am out in public in my scrubs, someone says thank you to me for caring, or how great the nurses were when their mother was in the hospital, etc. etc. A few times I have gone out after work in scrubs and someone has offered to buy me a drink or pay for my meal. My point is, TGH is a well-respected hospital and I am proud to have began my nursing career there. I wish the pay was higher but....the experience alone is worth it. My fellow TGH nurses seem proud to work there. I haven't heard anyone say that they wish they worked somewhere else....in other words, morale is good. There are probably some unhappy nurses, but I haven't met them. As for pay, once you get in the groove of things, you can always pick up a PRN job somewhere else and make $$$$..just a thought.

I don't know anything about Bayfront either, but my aunt is a nurse at TGH and has been for as long as I can remember. She loves it there, her co-workers have become like family to us all and they have great benefits. Being that she's a well-seasoned nurse, she could have went anywhere, but she refuses to leave and that stands for something. If Peds is something you desire, then TGH would be great for you. At least you know for sure that Peds is an option, versus going to Bayfront where you'll be stuck. Working at a hospital with Magnet status does wonders for your resume. You may have a lower pay scale starting out, but imagine where you could be afterwards. Also, a lot of residencies make you sign a contract, so you may want to check that out as well if you go to Bayfront. Being able to gain experience on different floors before going to Peds would put you at such an advantage. I say go with Tampa General; you'll thank yourself later.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly is the starting pay for a new RN at TGH? I am also trying to decide between TGH and St. Joe's

If you dont mind me asking what.school did you graduate from?

I work at TGH now. I can tell you now that no, TGH, unfortunately does pay as well as the other hospitals, BUT, you have more pros working at TGH. If you find a floor you really like in the acute care rotation program, you can apply and if you do well on that floor, they'll probably take you (or you can float). i got hired on as a nurse with experience (I had like a year experience) so I got paid about what some new grads get paid.

Hello! I have been trying too find information online about how to apply for TGH Acute Care Rotation. Would you mind giving me some tips on when to look for applications? I am graduating in May.
