Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

kristykat....as another female attorney looking to change fields (also with a BS in Biology)...have you decided between the USF BSN or the HCC RN? I am in the process of just beginning that investigation now. What about salary differences?? Would you the USF BSN program take us...even without an RN degree?

I'm not kristykat, but I am an attorney in Florida, who initially considered UF's program, VCU's Accelerated MSN program (Richmond), HCC's program and USF's Accelerated BSN program. I applied only to HCC and USF and for a myriad of reasons, I requested that my application to HCC's program be w/drawn in February.

I was accepted into USF's 2nd degree BSN program, beginning May 17th about two weeks ago. :)

The requirements for the USF program can be found here: http://health.usf.edu/nocms/nursing/AdmissionsPrograms/seconddegree.html

Hope that helps in getting you started. :)

So, what pushed you away from HCC and towards USF? I haven't been able to find anything in the threads that starting salary for BSN's is any higher than RN's.

Several things, really (some personal, some silly, some a bit more serious). :) (BTW, sorry for just now responding....I didn't get email notification that you'd asked a question).

Overall, it came down to the fact that my first choice has always been to get a BSN (and later an MSN). The 2nd degree BSN program at USF (for me) was the wisest/best option available. I have roots here (home, mortgage, other ties....)

Deciding to w/draw my HCC application didn't cause me much angst at all.

I'm applying for HCC Spring 2011. I just finished my prereqs at PHCC and will have a 3.7 GPA in them. Already have one degree from USF in Tampa and am trying to compare the local programs to see who is better! Good luck!

Hi all. I'm applying for the Spring 2011 program and want to be sure all my ducks are lined up. I just finished the last of the prereqs, GPA for them is 3.77. Also filled out the application w/check, but have a couple of questions.

1. I've heard you need to include a self addressed stamped envelope, didn't find this in the app instructions...anyone know where it states this and why.

2. I'm already a student at HCC and I'm not sure if I need to include college xcripts with the app from other universities or not. I've already made sure the admissions office has them on file, but the way I read the app, it requires they be included in sealed envelopes with application. Am I reading the right?

Anything else I'm missing?

your insight and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hope these help!

does anyone know what the cut off gpa for fall was? i have heard numerous conflicting stories. i am applying for spring 2011 and have a 3.71 (i am very nervous about it not being good enough) also i am trying to get my app in and i cant get a straight answer on transcripts...do i have to include my sealed high school ones again if i have already given them to plant city hcc and what about my college ones, hcc is the only college i have ever attended (it seems pointless to pay for a copy just to hand it right back to them?) can anyone help me please? i would greatly appreciate it; im sooo stressed!

Hi Stephi1985. I've heard the GPA cutoff was approximately 3.47ish. However, I don't know for certain. I'm also at 3.71 and truely not worried about the GPA, I think we're sitting very good on that issue. As for Transcripts, according to the cover page on the application package: High school transcripts do not need to be in your application. They do have to be on file with the school. Only College Transcripts from schools other than HCC need to be in the package in a sealed envelope.

I'm applying for Jan 2011 too :) Good luck to both of us!

dewytwix, thank you! i was confused bc while the cover page says that, the sec. III on the app says official transcripts must be included wit hthis app. But from other posts ive seen im getting the idea that if we turn our app in on time, it will be posted if we have something "not recieved"...yes?...i am just so nervous something will go wrong...pretty much all of my eggs are in this basket. and yes very good luck to both of us!

just an fyi for everyone...they will send the self addressed post card,if you include it, back to you to confirm they recieved your app

i know, i'm nervous too. i've had my package together for 3 months now, and i still take it out every couple of days to double, triple check everything. i'm going to send it registered mail as soon as my a&p ii grade posts in hawknet.

as for them notifying you of something missing, i wouldn't count on that. it states in numerous places that incomplete packages are not considered. if you're like me and need to triple, quadruple check everything call or e-mail this lady. she works in the health science office.

let me know what she says :)

traci said, it is always best to include the official transcripts with the application...so im guessing this is "a just in case" measure. with hcc, at least at my campus, i have learned you can never be to careful!
