RN: IV therapy, CPR, BLS and other certification requirement???

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi! I'm a foreign graduate and just recently passed my NCLEX. We moved to Tampa a few months ago and now I'm looking for a job in hospitals as an RN. I don't have any certification as to IV therapy, CPR, or BLS since after I finished my BSN course and passed my local boards, I immediately entered Medical School. Now, because of moving to US, I had to stop medical school and find job as an RN. Do I NEED to get IV therapy certification before I could practice as an RN? As for CPR, BLS, AED and ACLS, I see some positions in which they are "preferred" but not necessarily required. Can you please verify this so that if IV therapy certification is not a REQUIREMENT, I wouldn't have to spend $100-$200 for classes. Thank you. Hope someone can answer this for me.

You MUST have BLS....every place will require you to have that before you start working. The others are optional, but could help you distinguish yourself from another candidate.

BLS is requied, Some establishments require you get your ACLS after hire. IV therapy is usually not a requirement, some places train you once you hire inhouse.

From which country are you, if you don't mind?

I'm from the Philippines.

I'm from the Philippines.

I see. We're on the same boat, I'm a Filipino and recently moved to Tampa as well. But still on the process of License Endorsement here in FL. I hope you won't mind me asking questions to you in the future. Good luck on your job hunting:)

Specializes in VA, Ortho, Med/Surg.

For all of you, where have you applied so far? I doubt any hospital will hire an RN without IV cert. I'm an LPN and even I have to have IV cert.
