New Grad Hiring Freeze?

U.S.A. Florida

Published

So, I am a new nursing student in Avon Park, Florida. I will begin classes in August and I know this is early but, I have heard around the rumor wheel that there is a New Graduate Hiring Freeze? Is this true? And does anyone has an idea of how long it will last? I am currently living in Sebring, FL but plan on moving to the Tampa/Clearwater Area as soon as I'm done. And my fiance is a State Trooper in Tallahassee. Are either of those areas any better? I realize that the economy probably plays a role in this, and hopefully by 2012 when I graduate it will be better. I was just wondering what the outlook is for new grad nursing jobs??

Thanks in advance :)

All I can teel you is that I have my pinning ceremony this Monday. I was very let down with new grad positions in my area, Crestview/Ft. Walton Beach. But, after many job applications I got my first interview and job last week! I am hopeful that by the time you graduate the economy will be in a better state than it is today. I also just wanted to say that I was born in Avon Park and lived in Sebring and Wachula when I was little- heven't been back there since I was eleven. Good luck to you in your nursing school journey!!

Specializes in LTAC, Wound Care, Case Management.

I am a new grad also (March 09). There are jobs out there, I think it depends what you are willing to do. I didn't want LTC when I graduated, but have a great job working Baylor shift weekends. I don't need child care during the week and I bring home full time pay!! In my experience it is a longer more drawn out process to be hired at a hospital than LTC. This is a tough economy. My recommendation is to take what you can get in the beginning, relish the experince, and continue to puruse the job that you really want! It will come with time. Things always work out they way they are intended.

Good luck!

RN with 15 years experience here and living in Avon Park. My experience mostly in home care, but I tell you there are NO jobs available (at least that I can get) around here. I did just get a LTC job, but I am still looking for another job. Things would definately be better in Tampa.

I applied to A LOT of hospitals. It took forever to find a job but I finally landed one. Whew~! I thought it was never gonna happen there for a while! If you want that acute setting job, just keep pushing for it. During my job hunt, I discovered that most places wanted at least a year acute care experience so LTC experience isnt going to help much in that regard because a lot of skills arent utilized in the nursing home setting. Do well with the essentials (resume, interview, and follow-up)! Network, network, network! Network with employed RN's, network with friends!
