MDC Accelerated Program

U.S.A. Florida

i'm planning to apply to mdc's accelerated nursing program for fall 2009. i just wanted to know if anyone is currently in the prgoram, or has graduated from it already and can provide me with some insight into the prgoram. specifically i'd like to know about the program's level of difficulty, the schedule with classes and clinicals, how thorough the program is, if any scholarship opportunities exist, etc. how succesful are students with the accelerated option? doing well in this program is imperative for me as i plan to get an advanved degree in an extremely competitive area, and a siginificant deciding factor in whether or not i have a shot of acceptance is how well i do in nursing school. is it possible to get all a's in mdc's accelerated program? any information would be helpful and very much appreciated. thanks!

i don't have kids, but plenty of people do. just have very sorted child care, because missing classes is tough, and missing clinicals and exams is NOT an option.

anything is possible if you set your mind to it! :-)

Thanks for the info. I think I can...I think I can!!

Thank you so much for all the insight Magnesium. It sounds like it will certainly be challenging, but not impossible. Like EmpressT, I had a very rigorous, damn near impossible, undergrad experience and I survived. I'm looking forward to the program and to being a nurse...but mostly to the day I can burn my resume and tell Finance to take a hike! LOL

I am sssssssssoooooooooo happy I found this site. All my questions, more or less were answered without even needing to ask anything. I thank all you guys!!!!

I'm also interested in enrolling in the AO at MDC for Fall '09. I haven't applied to the program yet due to transportation issues (my car got stolen in Dec.), but I have enrolled at BCC to take my pre-req (Anatomy & Physiology) next month.

I'm hoping that I do not have to put off until Jan. '09 @ MDC, but if I do, it just gives me the opportunity to save a bit more money since I probably would not have a job.

I believe the hardest part for me would be to stop working, with no income after being in the working world for a while. But it is a sacrifice for the better. I am so excited to start the program and pray that God will guide and bless me throughout my studies, along with those of you already enrolled (Magnesium!)

Again.....THANKS!!

Okay, it's pretty easy if you're school smart (e.g. book smart or quick learner) and don't have a job or kids, also this assumes that you haven't left school for long - because a long absence from school would definitely make it a shock to jump right in... I mean we have a test every week or so. Most of the people still seem to stress a lot. To get a 4.0 you would also have to be disciplined, but it's wouldn't be that difficult then. There are scholarships, a lot of the people are on Workforce, student loans, and contracts with hospitals to work in return for some bling.

It's definitely doable with kids... lots of the people have kids, and my respect goes out to them all...

If you work, you're going to have some tired days, but I don't see why it would be that big of a deal, but I'd wait and see what it's like for you first... I have been meaning to get a job, but I think I prefer waiting for now, I don't like to be tired too much.

I started in January and it's great. The group is great and real mature, because everyone already has a degree, so they raise the bar so to speak, and there's such a variety of personalities, backgrounds, and everything, that it's fun, plus it's realistic, in other words, you have to learn to deal with that as a nurse so you might as well now.... The teachers are cool too, of course everyone has preferences, but, overall I'm satified. I didn't read the whole thread cause I'm lazy, but I remember seeing something about wanting an advanced degree and I would just ask... how do you know? Unless you've worked in healthcare before, that you will even like nursing? Anyway, I'm gonna go, it's late, I'm tired, got reading to do, and clinicals manana...

Have fun, don't stress the logistics... that's the most stressful part, smile and be cool to everyone at the school and they will make it much easier for you... remember they're all busy and stressed too.

later

:D

Thaks iridus. It was very refershing to read someone speak of the experience on a positive and "doable" note. I think that I'll be ok. I'm pretty good in school despite the fact that I have two kids and a full time corporate job...I still manage to always have the highest grades in my classes. I'm hoping that nursing school will be similar if not exactly the same. I'm certain that I'll be pursuing an advanced degree. I actually went to a Medical Magnent high school and always had the intention and desire of being in the healthcare field. I was discouraged when I realized how long I'd be in school if I pursured the area in medicine that most interested me. Needless to say, it doesn't seem that much of a long time now that 10 years have already passed! I pursued business instead, with ulterior motives in mind. I knew if that if it didn't work out that I'd have to go back to school because I don't enjoy Finance enough to be stuck doing it for the rest of my life. So now I'm back in school pursuing my original and only passion. Honestly, being uninformed played a big role in me becoming sidetracked. Had I known that I could still practice my particaluar area of interest in healthcare as a nurse instead of an MD, and get there much quicker, I would have done this in the first place. I'm much more informed now. So here I go!

Hi, I'm interested in the full time generic program, does anyone know around what time the classes start in the morning. I do not have an idea of what my schedule would be like. I'm not sure if I could do full time evening classes. I still need to visit the campus but I would appreciate any information anyone wishes to share before I go see a counselor. Thanks.

Cyn101, you need to read the other forum about MDC. It deals with only the generic program. This forum is about accelerated. I am in Generic, full time. The classes are held in the daytime. Times and days differ semester from semester. In the 1st semester you are on campus ALOT more than in the 2nd semester but that is b/c In 2nd you are always at the hospital. Check out the other forum for more info and good luck!

I will do that...thanks!

Iridius- just curious, how soon into the program do you start clinicals? Does anyone know what date in August school starts? I know I should know, but I don't and am too lazy to look it up!

Hello ....

I applied to the accelerated program for fall 09'. Does anyone know how the application process works? I am eager to know anything about the program. How hard is it to get into the program? How many students get accepted ?

Ogloria- from what I can remember from what an advisor over at the Medical Campus told me, applications are reviewed beginning May 2nd. I believe he said that they start sending out letters by July 1st...and the shocker, there are only 40 (may be 40-43...can't remember exactly) seats in the program. Good luck. I'm in the same boat as you!
