Hello all,

I thought I would start a thread for those of us applying to HCC's Spring 2013 nursing program. I am a Veterinary Technician/stay at home mom. I'm gathering everything for my application and hoping to drop it off at HCC soon. The deadline isn't until 6/1 but they recommend turning it in at least 30 days in advance. I'm a current HCC student. I was planning on applying for Fall this year, but am now expecting a little girl to arrive in July so spring it is! My pre-req GPA is 3.86 (all A's and 1 B), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program for DM evening classes. Good luck to all!

So, have anyone's documents been updated yet to show everything received?

So, have anyone's documents been updated yet to show everything received?

I've been checking daily and still nothing listed in my documents!

Does anyone know if we are required to officially change our plan of study with HCC before we can be accepted into the RN program? The reason I ask is because I was looking over the 2011 thread and someone was talking about being able to pull up the "Progress Toward Degree" section in Webadvisor and it will list whether you're being considered for the program or if your app was turned in/received, etc...I didn't think much of it before I read that post and now I'm getting worried. My major is still Liberal Arts according to HCC's system.

Also, would a withdraw/retake of a pre-requisite harm your chances of getting accepted? I had to retake A&P II because I originally took it during a Summer B semester (dumbest decision ever) and could only make a C so I purposefully failed the final so I could retake and ended up making an A (yay!) my second time around...

Only if you have taken a class 3x... that's a 0.2 penalty in GPA calculation for acceptance, according to the Nursing handbook. I know as that worried me for a moment as I actually took MAC1105 twice, but read up on the details to be sure.

My Documents is still blank, however my Financial Aid award letter has been inputted.

Loans only (having a prior Bachelors sucks in this case) so I quickly said no thanks to the Fall 2012 offer and will be saying no way to the Unsub one for Spring also, chances are.

Thanks for the info Gradius. I went up to the Brandon campus to speak with an advisor and she told me they take off 0.2 per attempt at 3 attempts which= 0.6 total for 3 attempts. So when I got back to work I found in the handbook where it states a TOTAL of 0.2 for 3 attempts. The advisors are not too knowledgable. I also found that there is an error in my transcript...it shows I withdrew from Alg and A&P 2 back in 2009! I hadn't even taken A&P 1 at that point so it was impossible for me to even enroll in A&P 2 at that point. The advisor told me it's too late to contest the error since errors must be reported within 1 academic year. So now it shows that I have 3 attempts at A&P 2 although I only attempted the class twice and now they will be deducting 0.2 from my gpa bringing me down to a 3.37 for the program. The advisor told me the only thing I can do at this point is appeal if I don't get accepted. Grrrr!!

If it gets to that, appeal indeed. You will win. You have to. It would be an error on their part that was not your fault. Plus, I actually think I read somewhere in the handbook that says something to the effect of "an appeal will be entertained if... it was found that an error was made in Prerequisite grade calculation" or something like that. As for the 0.2 and the advisor... taking 0.2 off for a SECOND attempt is rather vicious. And like you saw in the handbook, it's 0.2 after the 3rd attempt for sure. That advisor = FAIL.

KKJA8855 -- one other thing about the 0.2 and repeat attempts thing. Further proof exists that the real answer to this question is that it's 0.2 after attempt #3 due to the fact that any institution statewide charges you Out of State Tuition vs. In State Tuition starting with attempt #3. That's FL's way of penalizing you essentially saying "If you couldn't pass the class the first time, fine, we will give you a second chance with no penalty. But if you can't pass it twice? Then yes we will charge you more."

So, in other words, take that reasoning and apply it to the 0.2 rule after the 3rd attempt and there you go. It makes sense, I think.

Thanks Gradius! This further proves that I haven't taken the class three times because I paid regular in state tuition costs for the 2nd attempt. Hopefully they will realize the error while calculating my gpa and not deduct the 0.2! Unfortunately I've lost faith in HCC's system so I'm not holding my breath, lol.

I just check My Documents and the only one's for now showing received are: Consent Form, Health Sciences Proc. Fee $53, and Nursing Application Form. So still waiting on HCC Application, High School Transcript and Nursing Prerequisites.

The advisors at the Brandon campus have told me numerous times that you cannot repeat a course because I wanted to take statistics over but was told you cant have any repeats??? But I'll be going in with a 3.6 hope that gets me in!

You can only repeat a class if you earned a D or less in the first attempt. If you want to raise your gpa you can always take another math class such as MAC1105 or higher and the highest grade received will be what they use in the pre-req gpa. With a 3.6, however I'd say you're a shoe in so I wouldn't worry too much about trying to raise your gpa. Good luck! :)

Hello everyone. It is hard to believe that application period is closed for spring 2013. For those who still show "nursing prereqs required asap", they told me that it should show up in 6-8 weeks after application period is closed. So it will be the end of July probably before we can see it.

The wait is long and boring, so I'm taking more classes to keep myself busy. The fall thread is talking about receiving some letters from Brandon hospital offering to pay tuition in exchange of 2 years of work for them. What do you all think about it?Is it worth doing? Seems like a good idea?

The only thing I didn't get is who is eligible to apply? Something about working force agency???

Also I've been reading different posts in All Nurses about new grads and their sad experience with older nurses ..it is quite discouraging, hopefully it is an exception rather than rule. Hope everybody is having a good summer.
