Broward College hopeful for May 2013 Nursing Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I know there is a lot of confusion going around with the new requirements for the BC nursing program so I wanted to start a thread for those of us finishing prerequisites and applying in January. I'm in the Core class now, but other than that I'm finished with everything else and getting very excited to start next year!

I say they go ahead and admit all the awesome people on this board, then worry about the rest of those folks later. ;)

Totally agree with you!

Me too!!!! Also, I think they should have had their stuff in (all of it)! By the "application " deadline! That's the whole point of a deadline, right?

You have to hit the quote button on the actual post and it will fill it in automatically.

In reply to your post though, I agree that Nurses practice in a different (some would say superior) manner to docs, and I definitely plan on becoming a member of any RN association I can as soon as I graduate, but unfortunately NP's are still being held back by outdated laws especially here in Florida. They cannot practice without a MD's "supervision" and they also cannot prescribe controlled medications.

I think you might be glad to find out you might have over-interpreted these.

The second article is saying that NPs are restricted in prescribing *addictive pain medications.* They are autonomous, in FL, in prescribing other medications, such as antibiotics. I agree that prescription privileges for addictive pain medication should be restricted. However, IMO, restrictions based in profession rather than on training and permitting is a mistake. Many doctors have abused addictive pain medication prescribing. They are the only ones that can abuse these prescriptions and blame can be fully placed on doctors only. There should be special training and prescribing professionals, of any appropriate background and training, must register upon permit, and open themselves up to strict scrutiny.

The third article is not restricting NPs practice. It is limiting MD supervision. While it applies to NPs who are working in a setting that is designated as under MD supervision, it does not apply to NPs who are working in a setting that is not designated as under MD supervision (that is an area within the scope of their nursing expertise). It does apply to all PAs, who by definition, must work under a doctor's supervision. IMO, this is an example of the nursing profession advantage. More options. This is FL where regs are kept to a minimum and policies usually benefit the corporate bottom line first. ;)

Yeah I saw that already. Everytime I go into my mailbox and see Broward heart practically jumps out of my chest. Apparently we will not be finding out until next week. At least we have a Super distraction this weekend!

But a good way to know from prior threads is to keep checking the application status, as soon as it changes to preadmission we'll know!

Oh yeah, it is a constant series of browser refresh button abuse.

1) myBC Status

2) allnurses.com to see if anyone else heard anything.

3) BC email inbox.

I would say roughly every 30 minutes? Dang office job! I have made peace with the fact that we won't know until next week, but it will be much easier to live with once I don't have a computer screen in front of my face for 9 hours a day tempting me with its siren song.

I hear you! My problem is my dang iPhone. It's everywhere with me, I'm constantly doing all 3 things you said, and it doesn't help that I had a dream last night that I got in! I've too come to terms we won't know until at least next week, so now how about some football!

Oh and yes all nurses does have an app! Makes it even easier to obsess!

I discovered the app last week, but I stepped on my phone two days ago getting ready for work and shattered the screen. It still works, but until I get the money to replace the screen it is a nice deterrent. lol

Have a good weekend guys and enjoy some football!

Stacie29,I have a five-year-old in the free VPK, which is only half a day and for children who turned 4 by September first of the year they can attend. I had to pay tuition for previous years. I looked at BC preschool. I was not happy. They do not let parents walk in to see what is going on. There are certain hours and you need to make arrangements. That is a bad sign. However, you can still put your name on the waiting list. Do it ASAP to get a chance for summer or fall. Then apply for financial aid. If you meet the qualifications, you will get a huge discount for tuition, otherwise it is just a preschool, like any other, where you pay tuition. You can also apply to family central for tuition assistance while in nursing school. It is also based on income, but you must be working or in school to qualify, and you must apply ASAP and it will probably take forever, but you can choose any preschool on their list.I timed this program so that I would start school with my daughter starting K in the Fall. I need to go to school not worrying about who is watching the baby and I need quiet uninterrupted study time. The financial burden of daycare/prek can stop you in your tracks. Tell me moms are not at a disadvantage.
I can totally relate. Can you please PM me some on the information you mention about family central? Thanks.

I have the app, too. I don't check that often. Today I checked a few times because its Friday. I don't feel compelled to check on weekends because no one is there.

Just google the web page and search for info about it. I don't really know what its called, but it seems like any of the VPK preschools might be on the list, so lots of choices.
