Hello, I am currently working my first job for about 8 months and recently been getting staff reduce at my hospital. I work on a very busy med surg unit and for the past 2 weeks I have only work for just 2 days instead of my 3. The unit is full of patients but somehow I get calls that I am being staff reduce till 1 pm and if the they needed me my manger will call me. I never was staff reduce before till now and I am wondering what does it really mean? How come I am being called off my schedule shifts? I do not mind I guess getting an extra day off but I do need the money and not get short on my paychecks. Does anyone know what staff reduces mean?? Thanks

I would guess that it means they have to cut hours and are trying to prevent lay offs.

Ask your manager for clarification on this issue. There should be a policy & procedure on how this is handled at your facility. In some departments, they ask for volunteers first, then start calling people off on a rotational basis. If you're in a union environment, this process is probably outlined in the labor contract.

Unfortunately, being 'called off' (having your scheduled hours reduced involuntarily) is a fact of life in nursing.
