States Hiring New Grads

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hello everyone!

Not sure if I am posting in the right forum- but I'm gonna give this a shot and hope for an influx of replies~

Anyway, I am finishing my 2 year RN degree in AZ and have been looking at different random states to see who IS hiring new grads and I have to admit that I am becoming quite discouraged.

Can anyone offer any advice as to which states/hospitals ARE hiring us newbies?

Thanks for all of the help!

Eastern NC is.....the middle part of the state is starting to slow down on there hiring. I'm thinking that in less than a yr, NC is going to be in the same situation as the rest of the country. But as of right now, they're hiring more than many other places are!

Texas...the only bad thing, you have to live in Texas. I have talked to a few nurse recruiters and they offer positions in Waco and Lubbock. I'm sure there are many other states that are hiring as well. I suggest that you speak with a nurse recruiter and they can find a position for you, especially if you're willing to relocate. Put your resume on careerbuilder, hotjobs, or monster and a recruiter will soon contact you. Good luck!

Thank you both for the input!

I live in Maryland, near Baltimore and they're hiring. Not in droves, but I've been on interviews and have a few more lined up.

Where in AZ are you? I know a couple nurses there who recently told me that AZ grads can always find jobs. It's actually one of the things that is keeping me interested in the ADN program. Maybe they don't know what's actually going on?

I am in Phoenix. Alot of the hospitals want "experienced" nurses. There are new grad programs out there but I believe they only start their programs (orientation etc) twice a year. Plus I'm not sure if the pay would be as good as say a "regular" staff position. I have also thought about long term care - but was really hoping for a hospital position as my first nursing job as I do not want to "lose" my nursing skills - as you don't use nearly as many skills in LTC as in acute.

Vermont is hiring new grads. If you don't mind small hospitals (25-50 inpatient beds) and long drives, you should be able to find a job. It helps if you like cold weather and the outdoors.

Maryland hospitals are hiring. Talk to a few recruiters and assess for yourself.

try not to talk to nurses who graduated ages ago or even a few years ago about getting a job as a new grad. also try not to talk to people who are not nurses! the only ones who know how hard it is to find a job are current new grads and those who listen to current new grads. adns and bsn new grads are having a difficult time landing the job to gain the needed work experience all over the country.

one's in a new grad program right now and the other graduated last year (spring 08). i don't know. when i talk about the Job Search here they say that new grads not finding a job is weird to them. the new grad is in phoenix and the one who graduated last year is in flagstaff.

a lot has changed in a year. i know someone who moved to the phoenix area in december after graduating and is still looking for a job. now she will be competing with may grads so it will be even worse. since your friend did not experience the market change, i am not surprised that she finds it to be "weird". this is a normal reaction for those who have not had to look hard for a job. if she wishes to work some where else without much experience, she will quickly grow to understand.
