Hello everyone,

First off, congrats to all of you new nurses! I just have two semesters to go and I'll be graduating in May 2008.

I have a question for all of you...

My husband and I are planning a trip to celebrate me finishing school and becoming an RN. I am thinking about booking an Alaska cruise for the beginning of Sept 08. At this point I guess I will be at a new job. I actually graduate May 30, 2008 and then take my NCLEX after that. I figured that if I schedule the trip in September that gives me time to take my NCLEX after graduation.

So, what I want to know from you guys is this... if I start a new job, how would it look that I am going away for a week and a half shortly after starting work?

I really need to look forward to this trip. Can any of you guys give me some pointers? Did any of you take a trip after school to celebrate?

Please help. Oh! Also, take into consideration that I currently work full time and go to nursing school nights and weekends. So at that point I am up for a yearly vacation too.

Is it possible to take the trip before you start work? I graduated in July, took NCLEX in August and start my job tomorrow (September) so I could have taken a trip in between LOL but didn't! But yeah that would probably be better.

Cherokee, you're funny. I've been thinking about taking a trip over this next week before jumping in. I have my new hire paperwork and testing this AM, then in 2 weeks I start orientation. Hmmmmmmmm...where to go? flights are expensive....

I think that you should take the job after your trip. It won't get you off on the best foot with your co-workers if you take a trip immediately. Some people will resent a newbie being catered to by management, or else they will resent you having what they might perceive as a privileged life.

I once started a new position and worked for a week before I had 10 days off. I had planned this trip for almost a year and when I interviewed I told them such. I was originally scheduled to start work after my trip, but offered to start my orientation a week before the trip if that was ok with them. They took me up on it.

It's probably best to start your job after the trip. If there is a schedule conflict, be sure to mention it to your (future) boss before accepting/setting a start date. Most employers are willing to work with you, esp. if they want you. In some instances, they may not be flexible, i.e., they may have set intership classes for their new GNs, which you are required to attend.

I started a new job in August and will be going away for 8 days on the 21st of September. When I interviewed for this position, I told them I had this trip coming up and they were fine with it. They won't count you as full staff(meaning they con't count you in the staffing numbers)for a while yet,and it isn't anyone elses business as long as your boss has given the ok. It's been my experience that most places are reasonable about this as long as you give them a heads up-plus, they're desperate for staff.
