New Grads-how long for first job

Nurses New Nurse

I have read several articles about the nursing shortage and comments about new grads not being able to land that first job because of a lack of experience. Last month I started a new job at a hospital that hired a total of 50 new grads in various departments. Many of them were May '14 grads.

My question for new grads is how long since graduation have you been looking for your first job? If you have landed your first job, how long after graduation did it take you?

2years unfortunately ?

Specializes in Critical Care, Med-Surg, Psych, Geri, LTC, Tele,.

Nor-cal, Lvn. Graduated in nov. Started working in dec (last yr) lost that job in feb, I was working again by April. I've been at the same place ever since.

Six months between graduation and starting hospital new grad program. Program is 3 months long.

I think a lot of it depends on location, whether you're already working for the organization, what kind of experience you have and what type of degree you have.

6 mo post grad and 3 mo post passing NCLEX ?

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Graduated in May, licensed in June. Offered a position where I precepted in March, but due to a hiring freeze, they were unable to hire me. In July I started two PRN jobs, one doing health fairs and another doing home infusions. I've been doing those while searching for a hospital position. I just accepted a freestanding birth center job yesterday, still looking for something in acute care.
