Just looking for some advice

I graduated 6 weeks ago and I passed the nclex last week so I am officially an RN. But my problem is that during that 6 weeks, I was in desperate need of money so I applied to all sorts of regular jobs. One of them being at a hotel that was willing, so i took it. I had applied to a graduate nursing program but I was denied. and because of that I feel really discouraged about working as an rn. Like i feel that no one was going to give me a chance. to tell the truth, i've been afraid to apply for jobs because a lot of my friends who graduated a term before me haven't been able to get a job either. but i realize that i haven't really tried.

my mom really wants me to apply at her job, which is a nursing home, but i really don't know if i should. my mom treats as if i'm a shoo it because she put a word in for me and I know its obvious to take the job that pays more, but i feel like its a bad move for me to just drop the hotel job because i am a new hire. they went through all the trouble to do the background check, get me a uniform and train me. and for me to just leave after a week or two is super bad. i had an idea to work both jobs part time. so that way i have managerial experience and nursing experience. i just don't know if i should go fill out an application or not. anyone have any advice for me?

The longer you stay in a non nursing job, the harder it will be to get in somewhere. Hindsight is wonderful, but were you upfront with the hotel about becoming an RN? I doubt I would have hired and trained you if I had known you had no intention of staying with the hotel. It is going to look bad either way.

The next question is, do you want to work in the same place as your mom? Don't know your family dynamics, it may work out great or be a disaster; no way to know from here on AN.

I think you have a good idea about working 2 jobs for a while if you can handle it.

Get some nursing time under your belt so you aren't a new grad. Go casual if you have to. If it works out, after a few months you can tell the hotel that you finally found employment in your chosen field. They know you are a nurse, and will understand.

You went to nursing school because you want to be a nurse. Working in the hotel is not being a nurse.

Putting in an application doesn't mean you'll be hired right away. Sometimes it takes quite awhile. Being able to pay your bills in the meantime is important!

Get out there and put in applications! You can't get a nursing job if you don't try to get them. Is there something besides what you've told us, that's holding you back?

i didn't tell them that i was a nurse. i really needed a job at the time and i was afraid that they wouldn't let me in if i did. my mom is really upset with me for keeping it, but there really is no saying that i'll get a job right away. my mom and i have a good relationship but i just feel so bad because i can see how disappointed she is. i just don't want to be so broke that i cant even afford to drive to an interview or to my job. I just want to somehow be able to stay afloat for a little while. my plan was that after a month at the hotel, i would ask for only 3 working days and use the other 4 as my availability to apply to other jobs. i wanted to at least stay 3-6 months so that i wont feel so guilty for wasting their resources.

Get those applications out! It never happens overnight. I once got a call about a resume, over 9 months later.

People leave jobs all the time, and the employers know that it is just part of doing business. They would get rid of you in a heartbeat if they needed or wanted to.

You have to do what's best for you.
