IHS Service commitment

Hello,

I am a new graduate nurse and I am working at an IHS facility. At the hospital that I work in nurses only work 36 hours a week. The IHS wants 40 hours minimum of work a week. 32 hours per week are for direct patient care and the remaining 8 hours can be practice related administrative activities.

My question is that are there any IHS service commitment nurses out there that could help me figure this out? Has anyone figured out a great way to fill in that extra 6 hours a week that I need to fulfill a contract? Does IHS keep track of the hours that we work?

Hi there, I too am fullfilling a scholarship service obligation. I think that the 36 hours works for full time. I know they accepted my placement and that in one year HR I believe just needs to sign off saying that I actually worked full time for the past year... But, of course, with IHS there's always many unknowns...

What did your guys statistics look like? I am looking to apply for this cycle.. I am a MSN student and I am hoping to obtain this scholarship.. I have not been successful getting it 3 times already.. However, now I am falling under professional aspect.. Do you guys have anything that may help? GPA? Essays? or is it all pure luck and GPA?

My statistics: I was a second career BSN student who had an EFC of 0 at the time. Im male and had no clinical experience outside of nursing school. My nursing GPA was 3.8 and I had a non-nursing Masters degree GPA of 3.92. I was able to secure strong letters of recommendation to include in my application. I enjoyed writing the essays as I tried to tell my story with both passion and genuineness. I did my part in the application process, prayed about it, and left it in God's hands. Don't give up; keep pushing on because the scholarship has been a huge help. All the best

Thanks for the information. I am also a Male Prospect Nurse. I was accepted into Western University of Health and Sciences. They have a MSN-E program designed for non nursing bachelor degree holders. My EFC is 0 as well even still after my bachelors degree. My gpa is pretty similar 4.0 in my bachelors and a 3.8 in my requirements. I do have extensive experience in the ER and my letters were from Doctors that saw my work and religious leaders that can talk about my cultural background and community involvement. Im just hoping and praying that this could be my year.. Ive seen the forums and its full of people who are miserable in their commitment, mostly because they have never set foot onto a reservation. Its difficult to read those posts and talking about those communities, because that is where I am from.

Although there are plenty of openings at IHS facilities, there are several other places to consider to fulfill the service requirement. Working in a rural environment may not suit everyone, but I have seen several openings in major cities that have facilities with the appropriate HPSA score. If service participants are willing to relocate, then finding the right site that meets their needs and lifestyles should be more feasible. I know several folks who did their obligations on reservations with IHS and loved it.
