Hey Everyone, New RN Here!

Nurses New Nurse

I've been on the site for about two or three years now (from the time I decided I wanted to pursue nursing until now). I graduated from nursing school on 6/23, got a call to interview with a HR recruiter on 6/25, interviewed on 7/3 with the recruiter and it went very well so she referred me to unit managers based on my interests. Not even four hours later I received a call from a PCCU manager to interview on 7/5, the interview went well and I was offered the position on 7/9. And finally I passed boards on 7/20. So things moved rather quickly for me which I am grateful for! But now I am terrified of beginning orientation in a couple of weeks. I guess that comes with the territory though.

Anyway I just wanted to come and introduce myself since I know I will be spending plenty of time in the Nurses forum (gosh it feels good to say that, lol) from now on. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions/venting in the next few months, so I hope I don't annoy anyone!

My dear you will do just fine! Every new nurse is terrified. I was, and the day I walked in I thought I was going to die! See I started to work at the hospital that I worked at prior to getting my RN, so when I started I was treated a little differently. Not fair, but it happened. Just keep your chin up and don't be afraid to ask question. Remember, you will always have a lot to learn. The medical field is always changing! Even to this day I am still learning! I don't care if you are still in nursing in 30 years you will still be learning. You remember that you will be a very accomplished nurse! Be strong, don't let the seasoned nurses scare you, and you will do great!

@starmickey03 -- first off, congrats on getting the job, especially so soon after graduation! it took me almost 6 months before i was able to land my first job. i went through a new grad program and i'll be completely honest here: i didn't find the orientation/classes very helpful since it wasn't specialized between different units (except for certain areas like ER, ICU, neuro, and mother/baby). i've only been nursing since march of this year and on my own since may with only 7 weeks of precepted on-the-floor orientation. but here is the great thing: you learn so so so much on the floor and you will always have resources to go to. i am incredibly thankful that i work with such a great time of experienced nurses who do not let me drown and who are always watching out for me. i ask a billion questions a shift and always am double checking myself with my charge nurse, just to make sure. but it's definitely a learning process. you've made it this far, you can only go farther! good luck! :)

@godismystrength -- my friend went through the same ordeal. we both passed boards last september and she just finally got a job in july. she just kept on going to every hospital in the area and putting her face out to HR. she applied for every job possible, regardless if it was a new grad program or not, or if the job posting asked for experience. ask your friends who have graduated if there are any openings available on their floor and have them refer you and put in a good word. try to see if you can't get a job as a tech and then transition into an rn position when it's available. i know a couple of people who did that when they graduated from school. you just gotta persevere. don't give up, something will definitely come your way! :)

Welcome aboard and congratulations on passing your boards! I remember my first weeks on orientation and thought how much I didn't know. Find yourself a mentor on the unit and don't be afraid to ask questions. Good luck!

It's good that you were "here" while a student, so you know where to go if you need to find something out. Feel free to ask questions if you have a hard time finding something on the site! Hope you enjoy your new job!

Congrats! I so happy to hear that you were able to pass the boards and get an offer that quickly! It instills hope and pride in all of us! Keep it up and good luck in the job! You'll do great!

I just cant wait for the day to come when I'll feel somewhat comfortable in my abilities. Hopefully that day will come within at least six months.

I honestly dont have any advice. I actually wasnt expecting to hear anything from anyone so quickly. I had actually set it in my mind that I was going to just focus on passing boards and then look for a job.

I started applying to facilities in multiple states in April, well before graduation, and every place sent me a rejection email, even the place where I got the job (I assume they only sent the rejection because I hadnt yet graduated). But the morning that they called me for the interview, I said a prayer asking God to send something my way because I needed to get my life started, and three hours later HR called me. Before and after my HR interview, while sitting in my car, I sent another prayer to God asking for favor and asking to hear something back quickly, and a couple hours later the unit manager called me to set up another interview. And after my interview with the manager, I of course prayed again that they would offer me the job and that I would hear something by that following Monday, and thats when I was called with the offer.

Basically, I believe in having faith and the power of prayer. It always works for me! Hopefully you'll be able to find something soon. If youre in a congested area, maybe you should start looking in less populated areas or maybe even look out of state; just try to broaden your search and things may start too look better for you.
