Finding a Job!

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Im graduating with my ADN in Nursing May 20th.

So how do I find a place that will take on new grads?

I will move anywhere but the deep south.

I do love Texas and will be flying to Austin in April.

All through school I heard about how nurses are so needed. How do I find these hospitals? They are not here in Vegas, in fact one of the hospitals is doing a big lay off.

How do I find a nurse recruiter?

Same situation here, I moved from w.v. to n.c. to get a job, some areas are more in need than others. I lived in Austin,Tx. for some time and would love to return there some day, I dont know what the outlook for G.N.s is there but my cousin lives in houston and tells me there are opportunities galore there.

I have had some luck digging around the internet. My goal is to move to Austin and have a family! Austin is a wonderful city. I would prefer to find a job in Vegas. The hospital I am doing my clinicals at has so many empty beds. Vegas is just going down the tubes!

Please let me know how it looks in Austin, I do plan on going back someday, I have heard that it is still growing by leaps and bounds. Such a beautiful place, cant wait to see it again!

Hi Vegasstudentnurse,

How bad/ hard is it to find a job in Vegas? Sell me pros/cons. I was considering possible relocation there from the East Coast. Love the weather for starters.

Thank you, sunny.

Hi Sunny

Are you already working as an RN? If you are you wont have an issue. If you are a new grad at this moment in time I would advice against it. Nevada nurse are stressed out, the patient to nurse ratio is very high. I have not been encouraged to stay in Nevada for this reason.

VegasStudentNurse,

I recently attended my state's (Michigan) student nurse convention in february and i visited a booth for a hospital in Reno, NV. She had some very good things to say and they hire new grads. if you are interested here's the link to the hospital.

not sure if you have your heart set on Austin but thought I would pass along this info anyways.

Hey there, I am going to graduate myself this semester, and I currently live in Austin. Although...I lost my mind and applied for my license in New York, but that's another story for another time.

A couple things:

What state did you/are you going to apply to get your license in? If you're truly set on Austin, I'd apply for the Texas license b/c they have a few hoops for you to jump through. Finger printing, background checks, and what not. Google Texas Board of Nursing for more info, and be prepared: the website can be kind of confusing, but if you really want to find something out, you can.

Hospitals in Austin:

There are two main hospital systems in Austin: St. Davids and Seton. Seton system has several hospitals, and if you are a new grad, you HAVE to do the new grad program which is called "Versant program" I forget how many spots there are...I want to say around 40ish, but remember, you'll be competing with the UT Austin grads and ACC grads who may already know ppl that work there. BUT it's a great program, and it really helps you transition from student nurse to nurse.

St. David's system: A good hospital system as well that has a pretty throrough orientation program. St. David's South Austin usually seems to be needing nurses a lot...and of course everyone wants to work at the main hospital in Central Austin. They also have some facilities in Georgetown and Roundrock.

I say...if you want to come here, get cracking ASAP, b/c my friends who are graduating are already doing interviews and what not. But hospitals always need nurses!

BEST OF LUCK! HOPE THIS HELPS!!

Oh yes, and there's Austin State Hospital, which is a psych hospital. They are DESPERATE for nurses. I was an extern there last summer and loved it, but I know psych nursing isn't for everyone.

What's wrong with the deep south?!?

Try looking on the internet first for hospitals in the cities you are interested in. Look for the HR number and just try to call them. New grad jobs are not always posted, but they are usually available.
